Self-Assessment and Reflection
In the video "An Evening with Raj Sisodia: Understanding Conscious Capitalism", it is stated that a conscious leader is someone who exhibits emotional intelligence. 'Those possessing emotional intelligence can be characterized by how they display the four dimensions of emotional intelligence.' Aspects of emotional intelligence include self-awareness, self-control, empathy, and interpersonal skills. Mr. Sisodia explains in the video that bringing all these dimensions regarding emotional intelligence together makes a well-rounded leader. A well-
rounded leader creates happier employees and productive business practices. (Mackey & Sisodia,
2013).
Conscious Leadership and Historical Management Theories
Scientific Management Theory suggests that when employees are provided with clear objectives, specific guidelines, and incentives for motivation companies will get better performance from them. According to Griffin, R. W., Phillips, J. M., & Gully, S. M. (2020), “Frederick Winslow Taylor advocated that managers should study the jobs of workers, break those jobs down into small tasks, train workers in the ‘one best way’ of doing their jobs, and then
pay workers based on the number of units they produced." As a result of employees feeling dehumanized, the theory was deemed unsuccessful and was replaced by the human relations theory. This theory centers around treating employees uniquely as their needs vary. The effectiveness of customized compensation, bonuses, breaks, and snacks was tested and validated.
Self-Awareness, Self-Concept, and Emotional Intelligence
The aptitude to manage and govern one's own emotions can be described as emotional intelligence. While self-awareness is simply being aware of what you feel (Griffin et. al., 2020), these two go hand in hand. 'Emotional intelligence ranks among the top skills necessary for
3
effective leadership.' To effectively guide others, it is crucial to possess self-awareness, self-
management, social awareness, and social skills. Having self-awareness entails being cognizant of your thoughts, feelings, and actions, and their impact on both you and those around you. 'A leader who is aware of the impact their actions and emotions have on others will exhibit a more conscious leadership style.' Self-management is your ability to address any conflict, trials, or obstacles you face (Griffin et. al., 2020). 'Being a self-managing leader entails not just understanding one's emotions and actions, but also having the ability to manage and direct them.'
After attaining control over their actions, thoughts, emotions, and feelings, a leader must also focus on their social awareness. Social awareness is your ability to manage your own emotions and impulses (Griffin et. al., 2020). Social skills are how we address other people’s emotions (Griffin et. al., 2020). 'Managers who possess social skills can recognize their followers' actions and emotions, leading to a greater sense of empathy.' Conscious capitalism can flourish when individuals demonstrate empathy for others.
Summary of Test Results
In the Vark questionnaire it was determined that I am a multimodal learner. I learn by using different formats, graphs, diagrams, maps, layouts, space, listening, discussing, talking, questioning, notes, handouts, print, text, practical exercises, examples, case studies, trial and error and real things. I have always known this about myself. Something I have done since grade school is use different color pens when taking notes. This tactic seems to stimulate my brain allowing me to retain information better. In a work environment I follow what I know to be true and what has solid evidence of working. Knowing this information can help me become a more effective leader by remembering that just as I learn a certain way so will my followers.

The cultural competency assessment showed that the only area of improvement I need to work on is workplace awareness. There are several exercises that I can rely on to improve in the area of workplace awareness; build the cultural knowledge of my associates, educate my associates on how to communicate effectively when helping customers who communicate using a foreign language, promote good manners within myself and my associates, celebrate colleagues' traditional holidays, listen to foreign customers and colleagues having an open mind which will allow myself and associates to learn about the customs and perspectives of those from
other cultures. This behavior displays signs of respect and a willingness to understand different points of view. Pay attention to cultural differences and be aware of different time zones when scheduling meetings and follow-up calls so that it is convenient to the customer’s needs.
Upon completing the Rokeach survey, I was somewhat surprised by my results regarding both Terminal and Instrumental values. Terminal values are goals one wishes to achieve. My top five terminal values are: self-respect, freedom, family security, wisdom, and happiness. My bottom five terminal values are: a world of beauty, please, true friendship, having an exciting life
and social recognition. Essentially, instrumental values are a criterion or judgement that seeks efficient means of working towards the achievement of reaching goals. My top 5 instrumental values are: honest, capable, responsible, helpful, and obedient. My bottom five instrumental values are: broad-minded, imaginative, intellectual, loving, and cheerful.
Self-Reflection
Following the completion of these assessments, an individual may conclude that they have gained new self-discoveries. An instance of this could be someone acknowledging that these evaluations helped them understand the importance of remaining open-minded and
5
embracing knowledge, even if it requires patience. These evaluations may also impact an individual's principles, perception of others, one's approach to job responsibilities, acknowledgement that diversity exists, and people have their own methods. Despite personal preferences, individuals should remain receptive to learning processes and adopt different values.
'The evaluations may have educated an individual on the importance of considering everyone's perspective as a leader, even if it conflicts with their own values and beliefs.' Open-mindedness is a key characteristic of any successful leader, particularly in an environment with a wide range of diversity. Individuals may discover that their leadership skills include valuing diversity and embracing all differences in the workplace.
Analyzing Organizational Behavior
Understanding the influences on individuals and group dynamics within an organization is a key aspect of organizational behavior. The aim is to improve overall effectiveness and efficiency. A comprehensive understanding of organizational behavior can be achieved by considering its impact on individuals, groups, and the company. The collective behavior of employees can give insight into an organization's morale. Our focus is on the performance of individuals in a small group context. To achieve their goals, it is imperative that one analyzes and comprehends the performance of individuals working as a team. 'This provides us with an overarching view of the organization.' Employee happiness and contentment are essential for a productive and efficient work environment. Conversely, a toxic work environment can be fostered by negative and dissatisfied employees. A person's actions can influence the group, just as the group's actions can impact the organization. 'In addition to the contrary.' Companies can initiate the process at the highest level, rather than at the lowest level. Having a grasp of these
6
three perspectives and how they influence organizational behavior can keep the organization driven, giving high level performance, and taking on responsibility.
Conclusion
Comprehending the theories, components, and influences of effective leadership in both business and life can lead to enhancements beyond their intended purpose. The foundation of a conscious mindset lies in leading for stakeholders, oneself, and a higher purpose, elevating various aspects of life and business. Evaluating oneself offers valuable perspectives to shape future decisions and set goals for self-growth. Leadership is made up of individual components that come together to create a powerful force.
