ISIS 473 Assignment 1: Interview Step 1: The individual that I have chosen to interview is my mother. She has always been a very positive role model in my life and as I continue to have to make my own decisions and be independent, I still greatly rely on her input and knowledge. Step 2: Discussed how in class we have been learning about the importance of identifying our core values and how we can use them as a guide to aid in our decision-making process. I then further explained the difference betwee n jobs (a specific position of employment to earn monetary compensation), careers (a lifelong pursuit of professional goals and advancement) and vocations (a calling or inclination toward work that is deeply meaningful and fulfilling) prior to our interview. 1. Which of the three have you had a job, a career and/or a vocation - over the course of your working life? Throughout my professional journey, I have had various roles, gaining diverse experiences that have shaped my career trajectory. In my early years, I found myself working at the local grocery store, where I honed my customer service skills as a checkout clerk. Simultaneously, I took on the responsibility of babysitting for neighborhood families, showcasing my reliability and ability to care for others. These initial experiences provided me with a foundation in interpersonal communication and a strong work ethic. However, it wasn't until I embarked on my path in Human Resources that I discovered a true sense of purpose and fulfillment in my career. The transition marked a pivotal moment in my professional life, where I realized that my passion lay in connecting with people, understanding their needs, and fostering a positive and productive work environment. 2. How did you decide on your job or career path? What were the most important factors in your decision-making? Initially, I faced uncertainties in my career path, grappling with the challenge of finding the right fit. However, a pivotal moment unfolded when I was offered the opportunity to cover a leave, stepping into the realm of Human Resources. It became abundantly clear that HR resonated more with my professional aspirations than the finance sector. The importance of looking at all angles, gathering evidence, and making informed decisions has become a guiding principle in my HR endeavors. It is through this comprehensive approach that I believe we can foster a workplace culture that is not only productive but also compassionate and supportive. In the end, it's the people-centric nature of Human Resources that has provided me with a sense of purpose and ignited a passion for contributing to the success and happiness of individuals in their professional endeavors. 3. How did your education contribute to your job or career? Returning to school and earning a Human Resources Management Diploma has been a transformative journey that significantly contributed to my success in my current role. The continuous learning experience gave me a solid foundation of basic skills essential for excelling in Human Resources.
4. What was your first job after graduation, and how did it shape your job or career trajectory? My first job after graduation was as a receptionist with responsibilities in accounts payable. Although it was a valuable experience that provided me with a practical understanding of administrative tasks and financial processes, I soon realized that it did not align with my long-term career aspirations. In essence, my first job post-graduation acted as a catalyst for self-discovery and prompted a proactive reassessment of my career path. This realization prompted me to make a pivotal decision to return to school, seeking further education to equip myself with the skills and knowledge necessary for a more fulfilling and aligned career. 5. How has your job or career evolved over the years and what were the major milestones or turning points? Over my career, I have moved to various buildings within the company and have been provided with opportunities to grow and learn new things. There have been many opportunities to travel to other divisions elsewhere in the world and try to implement some of the values and strategies that we use here in North America, but also learn from the different approaches that other companies may take. Although I have worked in Human resources as I become wiser in my field and learn more, I have been given more opportunities to teach others and collaborate with various other HR managers to ensure we are all doing right by the employees. 6. Can you share any memorable or significant experiences from your professional journey? Given that I am a manager I have sat down with many employees and talked with them about their career goals whether it be in the company or positionally. In saying this throughout my professional journey I have really enjoyed mentoring people to help them reach the potential/career they want to achieve. This is one of the most fulfilling experiences that I have the pleasure of having. 7. What challenges did you face in your job or career and how did you overcome them? In any job you will experience challenges to some degree. Whenever you are starting something new or learning a new task or system it takes time to adjust and there is a learning curve. Similarly, as the world continues to change and adpat there are new ways of doing things more effectively so being prepared for change and embracing the challenges that come with change can make the transition easier. Having an open mindset and positive attitude can really help to overcome challenges. Treat every opportunity as a learning opportunity instead of a burden, as this will make it more enjoyable. My biggest advice for overcoming challenges os to remember the long-term goal or what the purpose of the task is. Having that “why” when you are doing something or learning something that is hard keeps you grounded in the task because you give it purpose. One of the biggest challenges that I experienced was when I was first starting to search for a job. It can be difficult to find a job, so I really recommend you make a good impression on those you meet. Always be nice to those in reception when going for interviews as even now when I interview people, I will ask my receptionist about their impression and thoughts on how the individual acted before the interview even started. Being nice and treating everyone with respect will get you far and can help you network, which is essential for obtaining opportunities. 8. Are there any regrets or things you would have done differently when thinking about your job or career choices? I do not have any regrets about my job choices. I have had a satisfying career that has been fulfilling and has aligned with my values.
9. What are some valuable lessons that you have learned from your job or career pathway that you believe would be beneficial for me to know? You cannot succeed unless you put the work into it. Things are never handed to you, you might feel as though you are entitled to them, but you are not. You need to stand out on your own, always look for ways to better yourself. However, at the same time, it is still important to be who you are and act in accordance with your values. Step 3: 1. Reflecting on both what was explicitly said and what was implied in their responses, describe the values you believe inform the job or career paths of your interviewee. I believe that my interviewee’s values may include helping other s, determination/hard work and continuous learning and growth. - Helping others/Empathy: The interview seems to find a lot of value in helping others as the shift from a transactional role (in finance) to one centered in human connections and organizational development to me highlights her interest in helping others. This is further supported through her willingness to go outside of her job description and mentor others to help reach their goals. - Determination/hard work: The interviewee was very outright about needing to work hard and create opportunities instead of waiting for opportunities to occur. Considering I live with this individual I can vouch that this is indeed a value of hers as she projects this value onto me; which is why I have the work ethic and ambition that I do. - Continuous learning and growth: The interviewee expressed a willingness to return to school after recognizing that their initial job did not align with their long-term goals. This reflects a value placed on continuous learning and personal development. 2. Compare and contrast these with your own values as articulated in your Workview and Lifeview statements. As I briefly explained, my interviewee was my mother, and it is fascinating to discover the alignment between my values and those demonstrated by her as she explained her career journey. It truly shows the influence significant figures in our lives, especially close family members, often play in shaping our own perspectives and values. In comparing my values with those expressed by my mother, several commonalities and potential differences emerged. For example, a value of mine that we share is the value of ambition/determination and a shared drive for personal and professional growth. Although our aspirations and goals differ, we have the same mindset when approaching them. Although my mother is better at overcoming challenges and having a positive attitude when encountering difficulties, I have continually worked to try and implement this mentality so that I may build the same resilience. Furthermore, differently, we both share a love of helping others and showing empathy. This is exactly why medical admissions tell you not to answer the “Why Medicine ” question by stating that you ‘like helping people , given that so many professions revolve around helping people to some degree. We both share the intrinsic fulfillment that comes with helping others and the satisfaction one experiences when making a positive impact on someone’s life is unmatched. 3. Prior to the interview, had this person influenced your own work values and, if so, how? As previously mentioned, this individual has significantly influenced my values, and I now recognize the striking similarities in our thought processes and actions. My mother has consistently been a role model, as she embodies qualities that I now recognize and strive to emulate. Her resilience in the face of challenges, unwavering commitment to personal growth, and genuine empathy towards others have left an indelible mark on my own character. 4. Did you learn anything new or surprising in this interview? As I alluded to, it was striking to see how similar our mannerisms are and where I may have been influenced in creating my values. There were a lot of little things that I did not know about my mother's professional career and the other possible routes that she was considering. It is reassuring that despite me seeing her today as a successful woman, at one point in time just as myself, she did not completely know what she was doing. It was humorous to know that at one point in time, she did not have the answers to everything. It humanized her in a way that excelled the traditional parent-child dynamic, as it created a connection based on shared experiences of navigating the complexities of professional and personal growth.
IDIS 473 Assignment 1: Workview Values The evolving nature of the concept of work reflects the dynamic interplay between personal growth and shifting values across distinct phases of life. As I have navigated through the various stages of my own development, I have observed a nuanced transformation in how I perceive and assign value to the work I engage in. The evolution of my personal values has directly impacted my concept of work. In the beginning, work was nothing but a pursuit of financial stability as to gain as maintaining independence remains a fundamental principle for me. The ability to self-sustain and avoid dependency on others has consistently fueled my ambition. I find empowerment in the autonomy to care for myself, and this aspect has been a driving force in shaping my goals and aspirations. In saying this, however, work has evolved to encompass personal fulfilment and thus purpose, which has been instrumental in my pursuit of a medical career. Within this field, I converge two important core values of mine: the relentless pursuit of knowledge and a profound commitment to contribute to the community. The intricate nature of medical sciences and the ever-evolving field allows for continuous learning, where the quest for knowledge becomes a perpetual journey. By engaging in medical research, staying current with innovative advancements, and honing clinical skills, I am not only upholding a professional obligation but also enabling avenues for personal growth and intellectual fulfilment. Furthermore, this expands into work being an avenue for helping others and contributing to the community which makes it purposeful. Being knowledgeable allows me to act in my patient’s best interests, as well as within the community. The ability to contribute meaningfully to the health and welfare of others aligns seamlessly with my aspirations for a purpose-driven career w hich I believe equates “good work.”

ISIS 473 Assignment 1: Worldview Values In my worldview, certain core values and perspectives serve as guiding lights, influencing how I navigate the complexities of life. Among these, the pursuit of knowledge stands out as a fundamental pillar. I view life as an ongoing journey of learning, growth, and exploration. The quest for knowledge not only fuels intellectual curiosity but also serves as a catalyst for personal development. It empowers me to adapt to changing circumstances, make informed decisions, and contribute meaningfully to the world around me. In addition to the biological imperative of reproduction, I believe our existence on Earth carries the profound purpose of enhancing the evolution of humans through collaborative efforts and harmonious coexistence.
