Though conflict is a normal and natural part of any workplace, it can lead to absenteeism, lost productivity, and mental health issues. At the same time, conflict can be a motivator that generates new ideas and innovation as well as leads to increased flexibility and a better understanding of working relationships. However, conflict needs to be effectively managed in order to contribute to the success of organizations (Walden University, 2022). A critical competency for today’s working professionals is to understand that we each have our own way of dealing with conflict. In 1974, Kenneth W. Thomas and Ralph H. Kilmann introduced a questionnaire, the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument, designed to measure people’s conflict styles. Based on people’s responses to pairs of statements, the instrument categorizes respondents into five different conflict styles: Competing, Avoiding, Accommodating, Compromising and Collaborating (Shonk, 2023). The collaborative problem-solving approach is the theory, method, or technique that I believe holds the highest efficacy in managing conflicts within work groups. This approach is based on the idea that conflict can be a positive force for change, and that the best way to resolve conflict is to work together to find a solution that meets the needs of all parties involved. With this approach we can: Identify the problem. Brainstorm solutions. Evaluate solutions. Select a solution. Implement the solution. The collaborative problem-solving approach is not always easy, but it is the most effective way to manage conflict in work groups. By following the tips above, we can help the team to resolve conflict in a positive and productive way. Shonk, K. (2023). Conflict-Management Styles: Pitfalls and Best Practices.
