Topic 1 DQ 1 Feb 5-7, 2024 Refer to the textbook to explain the difference between formal and informal professional networks and the components of each. Provide an example of a time you have engaged in both formal and informal professional networks. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each type? According to chapter 1, page 10. Formal professional networks are usually within the company that follow policies and procedures (Floyd, 2023). They usually communicate downward and upward from chain of command (Floy, 2023). Informal professional networks are building friendships with co-workers and help and assist one another when needed (Floyd, 2023). The communication chain is usually less formal and not within policy and procedures (Floyd, 2023). Communication in an informal setting is usually lateral. I communicate formally with my boss by following policy and procedures, especially when we get called in one on one or all managers are present from each department, and we communicate professionally and downward and upward based on the chain of command. Informal professional I have with a co-worker, I communicate with them to rely on with help or assistance. Our communication is lateral. The advantage is to stay professional with your supervisor and high up and the disadvantage is that you cannot be informal with your supervisor.
