History and Organisational brief (Sourced)
The Good Guys is a chain of consumer electronics retail stores in Australia and formerly New
Zealand. Its national headquarters is in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon Fields. Ian Muir founded
the company and following his death in 2009 ownership of the chain remained with the Muir family. In
2016, The Good Guys were purchased by JB Hi-Fi, despite competition concerns. When the first The Good Guys store (known at the time as Ian Muir’s Radio and Electrical Centre)
opened in Melbourne’s northern suburbs in 1952 by the Muir family, the company’s philosophy was to
delight customers and ‘do good’.Careful small acquisitions over the years provided the business with
a strong foundation. Still, it was re-naming to The Good Guys in 1998, supported by the unique selling
proposition Pay Less Pay Cash and the now-iconic TV commercial, which prepared the company for
national expansion. This customer-centric approach is also reflected in the company's ongoing
commitment to support and strengthen the communities in which it operates, and it's Doing Good
program which supports 14 charities across Australia through Workplace Giving, awareness
campaigns and fundraising efforts.

Since its humble beginnings in 1953, The Good Guys has been passionate about delighting customers and Doing Good. Our Doing Good activities and partnerships aim to address critical social issues while supporting the development of the local communities in which we operate. And, because we are Good Guys, we are also always trying to find ways of assisting those Aussies who just need a hand. One of those ways now includes an Employee Workplace Giving Program that allows our team members to donate to 12 charity partners. The Good Guys Doing Good Workplace Giving program started in July 2017, and every dollar donated by our team members is matched by The Good Guys, doubling the positive impact on the charities we support and the community. The Good Guys is a proud member of “The Australian Charities Fund” and are keeping their goal of #1Mdonors by 2020.Further on charities can be read at https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/doing-good
In 2010, The Good Guys established The Good Foundation and in partnership with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver and the Queensland state government funded the establishment of the first Australian Ministry of Food Centre in Ipswich, west of Brisbane. The Foundation aims to encourage and support programs and initiatives that have the potential to improve the health and social welfare of communities across Australia.
Current Sustainability Practices
(relevant to simulated context)
The Good Guys has a strong commitment to sustainability, especially product stewardship, offering customers a free third-party collection service for old whitegoods. In 2016, The Good Guys partnered with the NSW Government ( and hoping to work with other states as well). To launch an appliance replacement initiative that helps nearly 20,000 low-income households in NSW cut the cost of their energy bills, by offering those discounts on energy-efficient refrigerators and televisions. The Home Energy Action Appliance Program provides financial support through a 40 per cent subsidy for fridges and a 50 per cent subsidy for TVs. earners save approximately $2.8 million a year.Last year, The Good Guys became the program's delivery partner. They are responsible for managing all public enquiries, assessing customer suitability/eligibility, assisting customers with the application process, referring discretionary customers to engagement partners. For assessment and managing the sale, delivery and installation of new products as well as the removal of old products."When we first heard about the NSW Government's plans for a Home Energy Action Appliance Program, to assist low-income households through an appliance replacement incentive. We knew it was something that The Good Guys needed to get involved with," said Michael Ford, The Good Guys CEO. "We take corporate social responsibility and sustainability very seriously, and this program fittingly covers both areas," Ford said.

CONTEXT & SCENARIO
The Good Guys electrical retail stores in your state (choose one from NSW, QLD, or WA) have been
operating since 2002. The stores are bulky goods warehouse-style store, selling white goods,
electronics, and home appliances. There are 20 stores in your state that you have selected for this
sustainability initiative. Majority of the stores are about 2400 square metres and requires an overall
internal reconfiguration of its energy usage to reduce consumption and its carbon footprint. Your state
is renowned for high, dry temperatures in summer and freezing days in winter. You have recently joined the simulated organisation (or the organisation of your choice that will take
the new sustainability initiatives as part of corporate vision) as the “Environmental Change Manager”,
who will prepare the business case for the need for these new initiatives within the organisation. Once
the sustainability policy and relevant procedures developed, you will then communicate, implement,
and review the sustainability policy project. You will be progressively completing tasks one after
another within the simulated environment (or your preferred organisation going through change) to
complete this assessment task.
What change and what is required?
Currently, the simulated workplace “The Good Guys (or the organisation of your choice) is planning to
take on sustainable initiatives as part of the 2030 vision of the organisation. The objective is to reduce
carbon footprints created by the organisation and its employees. As more retailers are taking e-
policies and environmentally sound practices, your workplace felt the need to be at the forefront of
sustainable policies and procedures.
Your operational director has mentioned to you that some funds have available for this project and
your primary job is to develop, communicate, implement, and review the sustainability policy of the
organisation on a step-by-step basis. To do this, you are to focus on all stores of a specific state
(choose one from NSW, QLD, or WA) to implement this policy. You are to address the internal energy
consumption of the state’s retail stores along with its energy-efficient appliances, including office
energy use, office supplies, purchasing and cleaning. Since this is the first initiative of its kind for the
organisation, it is crucial to conduct initial research to find out the existing scenario of energy
consumption and resource use of the stores. The new approach of the company emphasises on its
vision that economic prosperity should not come at the cost of the destruction of natural and human
resources.
You will particularly:
scope and develop organisational policies and procedures that comply with legislative
requirements and support the organisation’s sustainability goals covering at a minimum such
as minimising resource use, resource efficiency, reducing toxic material and hazardous
chemical use, employing life cycle management approaches and continuous improvement

plan and implement sustainability policy and procedures including agreed outcomes,
performance indicators, activities to be undertaken, assigned responsibilities, record keeping,
review and improvement processes
consult and communicate with relevant stakeholders to generate engagement with
sustainability policy development, implementation, and continuous improvement
review and improve sustainability policies
To develop and implement sustainability policy and practices, you will need to refer to your state authorities. The state and territory government departments dealing with environmental legislation and
administering environment protection policies are as follows. ACT

TASK 1: DEVELOP AND REPORT WORKPLACE SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
Sustainability is beneficial to the workplace and the environment and your workplace needs a sound sustainability policy. In this Task you are required to develop and report the sustainability policy for your chosen workplace or the simulated workplace (The Good Guys). You will develop the policy with several step-by-step tasks following sequentially.
Task 1.1 Conduct initial research for policy development (9 marks, 3 marks for each)
Conduct an initial research and collect information (from at least three sources to be provided in the Appendix Reference List), on the following issues: a)
Overview of organisation and the requirement for sustainability
b)
Define scope of sustainability policy for your workplace by identifying the various environmental problems of the organisation in terms of resource use (electricity, water, air, food wastage, fossil fuel etc), use of toxic material, hazardous chemical use, waste management, biological impacts and environmental emergencies and response. Identify at least eight problems. c)
Stakeholders involved (internal and external) with the development of the policy. Consultation with stakeholders (to be completed in PART B).
CONDUCT AN INITIAL RESEARCH FOR POLICY DEVELOPMENT
Overview of organisation and the requirement for sustainability
The Good Guys is an Australian consumer electronics retail business. Ian Muir started The Good Guys, and the Muir family retained control of the company after his death in 2009. The Good Guys was bought by JB Hi-Fi in 2016.We currently have a free collection programme to recycle old products, and in some stores we have managed to reduce energy use by 30%, which represents significant savings for the company, but these changes are only the beginning of what we want to achieve, and for this we have a very ambitious plan and we are fully committed to managing andWe want the new sustainability programme to be part of our company's vision in 10 years, and we'll use more strategies and tools to reduce the carbon footprint created by the organisation and its employees, as well as encourage the communities in which our store is located to carry out this type of initiative for a better environment..
Define scope of sustainability policyand its applications for your workplace
The good Guys want to lower the organization's and workers' carbon footprints, therefore they regard their sustainability policy as transversal in scope, both in terms of purpose and duties. What we want is for everyone (employees, managers, stakeholders, and the community) to be focused on it.
Employees and managers have been trained in the company; our employees have been trained over the last 12 months to provide expert advice to help our customers choose energy and water efficient appliances, and our management team has been trained to implement this new strategy and become pioneers in environmental protection. We also want to include the community through meetings so that they are aware of the importance of environmental protection.
Identify the stakeholders for this policy development Stakeholders Relevance for this policy How will they be affected Sustainability, Assessment No.1 v1 Last updated on 06/04/2022 by MM Page 12

State the policy objectives, as quantifiable measurements outlining what the policy should accomplish for each objective c)
Explain how the developed policy and the strategies reflect the organization’s commitment to sustainability and as a business opportunity. PURPOSE, OBJECTIVES, AND STRATEGIES OF THE POLICY
State the purpose of the policy We want our goods and services to safeguard and conserve the environment by following to existing environmental standards and our sustainability policy, as well as promoting and solidifying a sustainability culture among our clients, colleagues, and suppliers. We see environmental sustainability as a long-term process in which we try to reduce environmental impacts by maximising resource efficiency across all of our activities.
State the policy objectives, as quantifiable measurements At the Good Guys, we believe that having quantitative goals is vital because it allows us to identify cost savings and productivity gains from our sustainability policies.
We have the following quantitative indicators:
Continue with the energy-saving initiative; by the end of 2023, we aim to have saved 45 percent of our energy, which would amount to a savings of $ 25,000.
Low-income homes will be replaced with low-energy equipment, and we want to reach Sustainability, Assessment No.1 v1 Last updated on 06/04/2022 by MM Page 13

30,000 households next year.
Reduce our carbon impact by 10% in all of our stores during the coming year.
Reduce the amount of water used by 25% for the following year and the number of prints by
35% for the following year.
In the following six months, increase the recycling rate by 15%.
How will the developed policy and the strategies reflect the organization’s commitment to sustainability?
All of our sustainability policies are designed to reflect our company's dedication to the environment, employees, and the community. We support state policies and laws as well. Because we aspire to be a leading firm in environmental care, our sustainability policy is extremely important to us, and we contribute to it every day through recycling, energy conservation, and staff training.
Task 1.3 Identifying existing resource usage and provide strategy recommendationsfor the policy (12 marks, 3 marks for each)
a)
Identify the strategies that will be used to reduce impacts (identified in Task 1.1) regarding the
consumption of the resources (i.e. electricity, air, water, paper), toxic materials (i.e. e-
waste)and hazardous chemicals (i.e. carbon dioxide, lithium use in batteries). The type of waste may vary according to your choice or workplace. Provide at least 3 for each. b)
Describe in detail, how the strategies (mentioned above) that can be implemented to ensure resource efficiency within the office. Who is responsible for carrying out these activities?
c)
Make recommendation on suitable performance indicators that can be used to measure the changing environmental performance.

January 2023 PROVIDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE POLICY
Describe in detail, how the strategies (mentioned above) that can be implemented to ensure resource efficiency within the office. Who is responsible for carrying out these activities?
The most essential thing to remember when implementing new tactics is that change must be gradual and intentional. As a first step, training for employees and managers is required so that they completely get what we are talking about when we discuss sustainability. It is also vital to enlist the help of the whole organisation in implementing this plan with stakeholders and the community, including everyone and setting clear goals.
Otherwise, it would be difficult to maintain these policies and they will have a substantial long-term impact.
We will adopt the following sustainable practises:
Reduce the amount of prints and submit the originals
Plants will be sold through catalogues and email invoicing.
Change light bulbs at each business and give green items to cleaning personnel.
Change the present store's paints for environmentally friendly paints; provide a consumer incentive to utilise rechargeable batteries; and reduce the amount of hazardous waste.
Reduce the use of petroleum products in stores by collecting batteries for free at home
As you can see, commitment to sustainable development will require everyone's cooperation.
Make recommendation on suitable performance indicators that can be used to measure the changing environmental performance The ability to correctly recognise indicators is critical for making better judgments. TASK 3: IMPLEMENT WORKPLACE SUSTAINABILITY POLICY
SCENARIO:
Now that you have promoted the workplace sustainability plan to the relevant stakeholders and office staff, the organisation has slowly begun to implement the actions. However, changes in the workplace under the new policy can be tough to get used to. To maintain the practices,
you need to develop a register for recording and tracking the continuous improvements in resource efficiency. You will also create two step-by-step procedures that relate to sustainability for your chosen workplace or the simulated organisation (The Good Guys). All methods should be communicated with the staff across the state to ensure awareness of the responsibilities each employee has towards fulfilling the actions. Task 3.1Develop TWO step-by-step procedures that relates to sustainability for your chosen workplace or the simulated organisation (The Good Guys). For example, you can choose any two fromthe following or think of something more innovative. (8 marks, 4 marks each)
e-waste (batteries, chargers, toners, mobiles, electronics, etc) recycling procedure,
procedure for general waste (paper, containers, glass, plastics, etc)
procedure for minimising energy waste(lights, TVs, air con, equipments, etc) during store operations and also closing,
procedure for reducing paper waste,
procedure for purchasing from sustainable sources for store operations
SUSTAINABILITY PROCEDURES
Sustainability Procedure Name: reduction in the usage of paper and reduction its wastage
Step-by-step procedure and instructions:
1. We require in Good Guys Take advantage of current technology to decrease paper usage; transmit

Effective from: Dear All,
It is my delight to notify stakeholders that the sustainability programme we are undertaking in NSW shops has received some additional enhancements:
Another key aspect to emphasise is that we have a sustainability record that we will apply with respect
to Lighting, Equipment, Waste and Raw Materials, Printing, Supply Chain and Waste Contractors, Water Use, Heating and Ventilation. The enclosed paper has a detailed description of our plans as well as the contact information for each registrant.
You'll also find the two new methodologies we'll employ to track and improve resource efficiency in our stores linked.
Finally, I'd like to present the people who will be in charge of ensuring that the following activities are completed in NSW shops: water conservation, recycling, electronic invoicing, delivery system, and electronic equipment revision and maintenance.
Please look through the materials and email me if you have any questions; we'll meet next Tuesday at
9 a.m. to go over everything more thoroughly.

time for a bi-annual review of the new plan. During your inspection, you have found the original plans have incurred both expected and unexpected results within the state stores/branches. Below is the breakdown of the outcomes of your sustainability policy in the last six months:
The behaviour the staff member towards paper use has decreased due to the increase in recycling and the use of digital media.
However, that has led to an increase in electricity consumption by 5% on electronic communication devices due to more use of mobile phones and emails.
Overall electricity costs have been down by 9%. However, you have also invested heavily in installing energy-efficient equipment and products in every store. You expect to reach the breakeven by the next six months.
Store managers have procured operational goods (e.g. paper, stationery, devices, tools) from sustainable suppliers, but this has increased operating costs by 8% in the last six months.
You have partnered with a third party (Airtasker) to provide some deliveries that include installation of goods at customer places. It has led to a reduction of fuel usage, installation hassle and employment of additional casual employees. However, this has also reduced the overall revenue by 2%.
Your implemented staff rewards for green initiatives (for stores/breaches) have led to some additional expenditure of $50,000 in the last six months. However, with these innovative green ideas and initiates suggested by team members have led to operational efficiency by 10% which means that you employed 4 hours of less labour in every store each week (4 hours x 20 stores = 80 hours per week). It has eventually led to a massive labour cost savings
of 1920 hours during the last six months. Sustainability, Assessment No.1 v1 Last updated on 06/04/2022 by MM Page 26

Dear Stakeholders,
In terms of sustainability, I'm pleased to report that, owing to the usage of digital media, paper consumption has decreased by 9% and overall power expenses have decreased by 9%.
Energy efficient equipment and items were also obtained from sustainable sources. Thanks to the unique ecological ideas and activities presented by all shop members, a 10% operating efficiency was
reached, indicating that the strategy was a success.
We still need to improve, but I am confident that we will do so in the near future, for example, electricity consumption increased by 5% as a result of increased use of mobile phones and email, but we are conducting a Disconnect the Campaign cell phone and laptop when they are already charged because we discovered that both products were still charging even when the charge was 100%.
Another disadvantage is that we had to hire temporary employees as a result of our partnership with AirTasker, and our operating costs increased by 8% as a result of our partnership with sustainable suppliers, but we are confident that in the long run, thanks to this partnership and all the savings, we will be able to use more organic products in stores. We still need to improve, but I am confident that we will do so in the near future, for example, electricity consumption increased by 5% as a result of increased use of mobile phones and email, but we are running a Disconnect the Campaign cell phone
