2 Short Essay 13 OSHA and Superfund Amendments Reauthorization Act Rules for environmental protection and occupational safety in the US have been defined by the OSH Act and SARA, which has an impact on businesses and workers. The OSH Act was enacted by President Richard Nixon, altering the course of American labor history. Ensuring safe and healthy workplaces across industries was the primary objective of the act. Companies had to eliminate risks that could cause death or serious injury to employees (Cutchen, 2020). OSHA was founded by the OSH Act to uphold the requirements of the legislation. OSHA monitors, cites, and assists firms in enhancing worker safety. Due to this legislation, workplace safety is now a top focus for businesses nationwide, altering the employer-employee dynamic. Compliance with the OSH Act necessitated a shift in organizational culture and procedures. In accordance with the law, they must prioritize worker safety, make investments in safety training, and recognize and handle hazards. This modification increased worker morale and productivity while lowering workplace accidents and injuries. Building a safe workplace satisfied regulatory requirements, fostered a positive corporate culture, and helped firms attract and keep qualified employees who were concerned about their health, as discovered by many employers (Page, 2019). Benefits under the OSH Act were higher for workers. The rule allowed workers to report safety issues without fear of retaliation, promoting free communication between companies and employees. In a number of industries, it also established joint labor- management safety committees, enabling employees to actively recognize and address safety concerns. There were fewer work-related illnesses, accidents, and fatalities since employees worked in safer environments.
3 Although it had a distinct goal, the 1986 Superfund Amendments Reauthorization Act (SARA) had a similar effect. CERCLA, a 1980 law that dealt with hazardous waste remediation, was updated by SARA. By addressing site remediation, accountability, and community involvement in cleanup, SARA enhanced and enlarged CERCLA (Shareefdeen & Elkamel, 2022). SARA made management and disposal of hazardous waste more stringent for employers. It increased the financial culpability of those who release hazardous substances and established cleanup standards for affected places. This compelled the hazardous material sectors to enhance their environmental oversight and increase their awareness of possible legal ramifications. Companies that fail to properly dispose of hazardous waste may face financial and legal repercussions. By improving environmental conditions, the measure also indirectly benefited workers. By increasing cleaning transparency, the policy gave communities more influence over environmental decisions. Due to the increased public involvement, workers and communities were empowered to speak up for their health and safety and hold accountable those in charge of managing hazardous waste sites, including regulatory agencies (Jettner, 2023). US businesses and workers have been significantly impacted by the Superfund Amendments Reauthorization Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The OSH Act encouraged cooperation and communication between employers and employees while placing a high focus on workplace safety. Hazardous waste site management was altered by SARA, which increased corporate accountability and promoted community involvement in environmental decision-making. US workplaces are now greener and safer thanks to these laws.
