Review Questions # 1 : Indicate Mary’s attitudes before and after meeting her colleague (Sue). If there was a change, why? o Before the meeting to her colleague, Mary was very exited by the positive feedback on her performance review and felt the review process was fair with no bias. She was also motivated and looking forward to working for the company. However, after meeting Sue and found out about Sue’s started salary was much different than hers, her attitude has changed from happiness to anger, and she felt under rewarded and humiliated by the company. Review Questions # 3 : What motivation theory applies best to this scenario? Explain: o The Equity Theory applies best based on the scenario given. The reason of Equity Theory would be best fit is Mary felt unfairly treated by the company when she learned that her colleague was making more money than she was. The motivational value can impact an individual behavior. For example, Mary was very exited and “felt quite rewarding” when she learned 10% increase on her salary. She was also motivated and looking forward on working for the company. However, once she found out about her co-worker salary level, ultimately she felt under rewarded and hostile by the company. Key problems: o Based on the case, polices and procedures regarding the inappropriate of sharing pay rates with colleagues seems was not enforced. o Fairness at this workplace was not existed as Mary have worked for the company above and beyond her job descriptions but still paid less than her co-worker though they both attended the same college and had a similar academic performance at the college. Recommended solution : o The company should have detailed polices and procedures in place about the inappropriate of sharing pay rates with colleagues. The employees should be aware of such information is confidential and should not be discussed in the workplace. The policy should also include the type of the disciplinary actions would be held for the person who disclose his/her pay rates to co-workers. This type of documentation should be sign by employee and kept Employee’s Human Resource Folder for reference.
