Chosen case for this presentation is Case 1: Aldi and Walmart: on the collision course? 1 Aldi and Walmart are prominent players in retail industry. In 1999, walmart became the wealthiest and most prominent private employer globally. However by 2021, Aldi was opening 130 stores per year. Man observers noticed Aldi was setting insights on Walmart and opening new stores close to walmart supercenters. 2 First we will discuss the reasons behind Walmart domination and then their decline as well in grocery industry. (READ REASONS) 3 To fight with the challenges, Bill simon took over and took some major steps such as refocusing on core values and customer base. He also addressed operational challenges and revitalize customer relations. 4 Aldi has also modified the standard grocery model by using operational strategies (Read points under operational strategies). Aldi also increased customer engagement by doing (Read points under customer engagement heading) 5 Competitive positioning is important because it communicates to your customers the reasons they should choose you over your competitors, while showing an understanding of their problems and unmet need. This is why Aldi worked on improvinf competitive positioning by doing (Read points under compettiive positioning heading). 6 There area number of reasons behind success of Aldi including (READ POINTS) 7 Aldi and Walmart both faced challenges and opportunities. Lets understand opportunities for Aldi first. Aldi has opportunity for expansion and growth. Aldi's strategy is based on store expansion and dipped its toes into ecommerce to varying degrees in China, UK and the US. To provide quality product at low price to obtain compettive edge over competitiors is no less than a challenge. 9
As Walmart's business model evolves, a focus on omnichannel strategy is the thread tying together its e- commerce business, fulfillment services, advertising and more. One more opportunity is to bring diversification and innovation. 10 Walmart encounters several problems that include stiff competition, a negative reputation, constraints in business. The two major challenges includes: (READ 2 POINTS IN SLIDE 10) 11 Since global economy in recession, the sales of Aldi UK have increased dramatically, because Aldi is selling the low-price products with high quality to customers who would like to spend little money for goods in order to safely spend this period.
