Simon Sinek addressed the vital importance of an organization or leader, starting with the why to determine the how (2009). This is not just a successful sales tactic used by Apple and Martin Luther King Jr. alike, but the motive and core behind everything they do (Sinek, 2009). There was a major shift when Nike changed their why from selling athletic wear to changing business models to make the world a better place. They decided to become more responsible with their suppliers to address public outcry and a negative reputation (Paine et. al, 2013). In the process, they became aware of their potential and privilege to not only impact their bottom line, but take responsibility for how sustainable business is modeled on a larger scale (Paine et. al, 2013). For example with their suppliers, Nike saw opportunities for "actually changing the way factories work...we think we can transform how the product is made and how our business model works" (Paine et. al, pg 4, 2013). Nike executives are quoted early on in this endeavor, transforming suppliers, "we’re going to fix them and we’re going to raise the standards of the whole industry" (Paine et. al, pg 6, 2013). Authenticity and Vulnerability assisted Nike in altering their reputation with shareholders, and help the organization grow from past failings. Once realizing the conditions of factories supplying their products, they took responsibility and started working on solutions for the workers. They also realized their carbon footprint, and made it their new mission to become sustainable, and start innovating designs aligned with that mission. After realizing errors and blindsides with sustainability and labor, they practiced vulnerability when reaching out to peers to find other trending areas of importance they need to work on (Paine et. al, 2013). Brene Brown shares "when you shut down vulnerability, you shut down opportunity" (2010). Nike was using the vulnerability of being under scrutiny, to learn and develop, pushing themselves for greatness.
