Critical Thinking Development Assessment 1 1. Identify and research a critical and creative thinking model, which is NOT discussed in the APC student book. RED MODEL OF CRITICAL THINKING. a. Define the model. This is a type of framework of critical thinking that actually helps individuals in developing their critical thinking skills. It has 3 components that plays a great role in assisting the users which includes the part of recognizing the issue as well as the argument behind the issue(Davies & TalentLens, 2019) the second part involves evaluation of the reasoning about the issue which basically means that the member is able to assess the validity of the evidence presented and therefore be able to look for an alternative solution and lastly, we have the last stage which is the drawing the conclusion on the issue by carefully looking at all angles and finally being able to come up with the most viable solution to the problem at hand . b. Define its benefits. This type of critical and creative thinking model helps an individual as well as a team when it comes to breaking down complex problems by allowing the thorough investigation of all the present assumptions and critically analyzing arguments and it leads to effective problem-solving strategies. The other benefit is that by recognizing the assumptions/ideas, and also carefully evaluating arguments, and drawing conclusions, individuals are able to make more informed and rational decisions when trying to mitigate a problem within the workplace or even in their own personal lives. This model also has another benefit given that by understanding the components of the model, it facilitates clear and concise communication within the team and it enables individuals to tailor their thoughts and reasoning in a structured manner so as to achieve the intended objective. And most importantly, this model encourages individuals to question preconceived ideas and therefore approach problems with an open mind. c. Explain its stages.
2. A manager at your organisation explains that two employees in his team are not performing according to expectations. Prepare a list of 8 questions that you could ask to identify the knowledge gap. i. Have they been provided with clear performance expectations and goals? ii. What are the specific tasks are the two employees struggling with? iii. Do we any changes maybe with the operating machines or any other areas within our company that the two employees are not familiar with? iv. Have the two of them informed you as their manager about any challenge that they might be facing within the workplace? v. How often do you conduct a performance review with your team? vi. What kind of feedback do you provide for your team and how often do you do that? vii. Are the employees (2 of them) well informed on what is expected from them in terms of goals and objectives? viii. Do they have the necessary skills required to handle their allocated tasks? 3. Based on answers that you received from the manager (question 2 above), you determined that both employees have knowledge gaps for the following reasons: - Employee A is a new employee working on a new project - Employee B has been in the organisation for two years. He is on job rotation. Answer the following questions: the first stage is to recgognize the assumptions/ ideas that are available and identify their own influence in their thinking . this is the second stage where by individuals evaluate their own reasoning to access the evidence at hand as well as the aurgument of the case to see if the evidence presented are logical. drawing conclusion is the last stage and it involves carefully looking at the information that has been gathered on an issue and ensuring that the team comes up with the most suitable solution to the problem.
a. What approach would you follow to identify the gap for both employees? Employee A (new project) Employee B (Job rotation) I will begin by conducting a review on the onboarding process to ensure the employee receives comprehensive training on our policies, project goals, and job responsibilities within the company. Then I will have a one-on-one discussions with Employee A to understand their own understanding of the project requirements and from the meeting, I will be able to identify any challenges the employee A might be having when it comes to performing to the expected standard, and I will have an opportunity to clarify any uncertainties within the new project being handled by employee A. It will also be necessary for me to evaluate the employee's work and project outcomes to assess practical application of knowledge and skills, and also try to seek feedback from team members and project stakeholders regarding Employee A's contributions and areas that they feel employee A may need to improve on. For employee B, I will have to review the job rotation plan as well as the objectives so as to ensure clarity on the different roles and responsibilities Employee B has undertaken. The other approach will be conducting a skills assessment to identify areas where Employee B need additional training and support on to ensure that necessary arrangements are made for employee B to gain the skills to comfortably handle the allocated tasks to perfection. The other important approach that I will take will be to schedule a performance review discussion so as to understand Employee B's perspective on the challenges he is facing during the job rotation and also to gather insights on areas requiring improvement. I will also have to working closely with the other members by seeking their feedback including the supervisors and colleagues who have worked with Employee B in various roles to get an understanding of their performance in general so that it will be easier to identify the actual reason behind their poor performances at this particular job. b. What learning opportunities would you offer to Employee A? c. What learning opportunities would you offer to Employee B? Learning opportunities for Employee A Learning opportunities for Employee B Provide the employee with opportunities to attend organized seminars and workshops so that employee A gets to learn more about the new project they are handling. The first approach will be to provide targeted training to address any gaps in skills as well as knowledge, related to the various roles undertaken during the job rotation within our company so that employee B will be well equipped to handle any tasks allocated to them. Ensure that the new employee understand what is required of them Employee B will also be able to improve on his performances being guided by a

according to the policies of our company and also the stipulated industry standards expected for the new project. fellow colleague and this is why I will have to assign a person within the workplace and in particular from the same area as that of employee B so that it will become easier for employee B to learn directly from a fellow workmate. The other opportunity will be to provide the employee A with a workplace mentor who is more experienced in working with the kind of project employee A is handling. The best way for someone to learn is from their own mistakes and this is why I will establish regular feedback mechanisms to ensure that employee B gets to understand the area that they still need to improve on. I will also use success stories as case study to enable employee A to learn from actual previous recorded documents. From the case study, employee A will be able to understand the approaches of others when handling a new project and this will ensure that he improves in performance. 4. One of the gaps that you identified for both employees is a “lack of critical thinking” skills. The manager assigns the task of articulating the concept of critical thinking to both employees. a. Prepare an outline of topics that you could use to introduce critical thinking to both employees. CRITICAL THINKING TOPICS OF DISCUSSIONS. i. Introduction to Critical Thinking ii. Key Elements of Critical Thinking iii. Questioning in Critical Thinking iv. Practical Exercises and Case Studies v. Continuous Improvement and Reflection b. Explain what you will discuss in each topic. CRITICAL THINKING TOPICS OF DISCUSSIONS. EXPLANATION. i. Introduction to Critical Thinking The employees will be introduced to the topic by establishing a foundational understanding of what critical thinking is all about and why it is vital in the workplace. This is crucial given that it will provide the employees with the basics of critical thinking early enough for better understanding. ii. Key Elements of Critical Thinking Here I will be using the RED model of critical thinking and, I will teach them the
skills of identifying underlying assumptions in information and arguments ensuring to Emphasize the importance of assessing the quality and relevance of evidence at hand regarding an issue/case and most importantly, guide the employees in making sound and reasoned judgments whenever an issue (s) a raises within their respective workplace. iii. Questioning in Critical Thinking In this topic, we will discuss how asking thoughtful questions leads to deeper understanding of an issue and therefore providing an opportunity for making informed decisions within the workplace. iv. Practical Exercises and Case Studies Now this will be our most important topic of them all given that I will engage the employees in practical exercises to apply critical thinking skills. Hands-on is very important in ensuring that the employees understand and get the skills they need to effectively apply their critical thinking skills they will have learnt. v. Continuous Improvement and Reflection Finally, I will stress the need for ongoing development in critical thinking. The employees will be encouraged to reflect on experiences and continuously refine their critical thinking skills. 5. Please answer the following questions according to your workplace a. What kind of organisational system does your organisation have? Explain. At our organization we have a hierarchy system whereby all decisions are made by the higher authority when it comes to decision making (Lawrence & Poliquin, 2023). As an employee, I only follow the provided instructions from above and I do not have the power or even authority to decide on something within our company even though I might have the right solution to an issue. b. What barriers to critical thinking does your organisation have? Explain. i. As employees, we cannot have given an opportunity to use our critical thinking skills in making a decision given that the decisions are always made by the top management meaning that we (employees) have no room to use our critical thinking skills. ii. The other barrier is that in an event of an emergency at work whereby it requires immediate action, it becomes difficult for employees to save the situation given that it requires the authorization of the top management in
order to implement a solution which means that the business will be likely to experience a loss with the fact that employees do not have a say in critical issues within the company. iii. It also limits the ability of employees to fully explore and also grow their critical thinking skills with the fact that all important decisions are usually left for the management meaning that the employees are not given an opportunity to participate in the solution finding process . 6. Explain psychological safety and its importance to critical thinking. This is can be described as a situation whereby a person has a freedom to do whatever they feel like when it comes to exploring their critical and creative skills. In a psychological safety environment, an individual does not fear to try or explore (Newman et al., 2017) an idea given that they feel that they will not be criticized or even judged by the people surrounding them. The importance of having a psychologically safe environment is that it provides an individual with opportunity to experiment more ideas and this ensures that the best solution is found for an identified problem within the workplace. It also allows the member to speak freely during a brainstorming meetings and therefore the team gets multiple solutions from different perspective which makes it easier to solve a pressing issue. It is also important especially during an emergency given that an individual is able to make a decision promptly without consulting others and this ensures that the identified issue is solved on time reducing its negative impact on the business.
