Report
Paid informants can help police solve crimes, but they have both pros and cons. On the positive side, informants can provide valuable tips that lead to arrests and convictions. They might have inside information about criminal activities, helping police dismantle gangs or stop drug operations. However, there are drawbacks. Informants may be unreliable, giving false information for money or personal gain. Relying on them too much can erode trust in the justice system and raise ethical concerns. Plus, informants might be involved in criminal activities themselves, making it hard to know if their motives are genuine. So, while informants can be helpful, police must use caution when depending on them. The "code of silence" is when police officers don't report wrongdoing by their colleagues. In one case, officers witnessed a fellow officer using excessive force, but no one spoke up. This silence protected the wrongdoer, eroded trust in the police, and led to calls for reform in the department. When people see police officers use the code or silence im sure they feel unsafe. They feel like they can’t even count on the police to tell the truth or make them feel protected. I understand the loyalty aspect but i don’t understand how if they’re serving their country and making the world a better/cleaner place how can they allow for corruption and misrepresentation to happen. Also long term if they were to get caught they would look bad and frowned upon because they protected their friend. I agree with the pros and cons of paid informants that you mentioned. They do help officers with tips, but may also lead them to bigger dilemmas. I also think that the community will feel unsafe after seeing an officer practice the code of silence. It begins a relationship with the community that lacks trust. Hi Kimberly, I agree! Informants can lead to valuable tips for on going investigations which can lead to arrests and convictions however relying on paid informations can come with some cons. Cons being that some informants only do it for their own personal gain, in other words for their own criminal case. I also think that this alters the way society and the public view the police. It leads the public to mistrust the police because it looks like they value loyalty over the truth. You have established your claim that police should be wary of paid informants’ cons like false information and ethical concerns. Do you think the police should do away with paid informants and instead use a safer investigation method? Also, you express a dislike opinion as far as the police’s silent code of conduct is concerned. Can you snitch on your friend in the name of justice?
Yanneris Martin Yanneris Martin Sep 21, 2023Sep 21 at 1:09pm Manage Discussion Entry Hello Kimberly, Regarding your opinion on code of contact I believe the secret to why officers may hide information or restraint themselves is mostly to reduce internal conflict; Reporting a colleague's misconduct can create internal conflicts within a police department, which might distract from core duties. The code of silence can help maintain a more tranquil work environment. This also impacts police image. Police are mistrusted because they seem to prioritize loyalty above truth. Law enforcement must take into consideration the dangers of using informants, for both of their safety. In regard to ethical concerns, as you briefly mention, informants are subjected to life threatening situations and may lose their life to help apprehend a criminal. Some people may not approve of this and will consider the use of informants unethical. Thanks for giving us some more insight on the pros and cons of informants. Reese Moss Reese Moss

Sep 23, 2023Sep 23 at 10:33am Manage Discussion Entry Hello Kimberly, informants can also receive legal benefits such as reduced sentencing or immunity for their assistance to police officers. I think that it is important you noted informants can be unreliable and they may be doing it for their own motives such as financial gain like you mentioned.
