Reflection Paper: Ethical Standards & Improvement Name Department Course Professor Date
Ethical Standards & Improvement Introduction As a student, maintaining academic integrity is essential in achieving success and setting a foundation for future endeavors. However, instances of academic dishonesty can have severe consequences, leading to a tarnished reputation, loss of credibility, and penalties that can negatively impact personal and professional growth (Morris, 2018). The allegations involved posting an image of Quiz #1 during the quiz window in LEI 3400- Conditions & Diagnoses in Recreational Therapy. As a result, I was found guilty of cheating violations, including unauthorized use of materials, information, study aids, and assistance from another person. Therefore, reflecting on the importance of research ethical standards and maintaining personal integrity in all aspects of life, including academia and future career pursuits, is essential. Research Ethical Standards In my future job, I intend to practice the greatest ethical standards in research. Making certain that my study is carried out with the greatest honesty and integrity is one of the major ethical criteria that I desire to adhere to as a researcher. In my opinion, being honest while doing research entails not only avoiding the fabrication or falsification of data, but also avoiding the practice of cherry-picking evidence that bolsters a conclusion that has already been decided. Instead, research need to be conducted in a manner that is neutral, objective, and impartial (Slotfeldt-Ellingsen, 2023). Protection of human beings is another code of ethics that I want to conduct my research in accordance with. As a researcher, one of my primary responsibilities is to put the health and safety of the people who take part in my studies at the top of my list of concerns. It is incumbent upon me to ensure that all of my participants are provided with proper
debriefing, that they are given informed permission, and that their privacy is preserved. Since it prevents participants from being injured, exploited, or forced in any way, this norm is of the utmost importance. In addition, I think it is important for researchers to be as open and honest as possible. This indicates that I will make an effort to be explicit and open about the process of my study, the data collecting, and the data analysis that I do. Other researchers will be able to confirm the accuracy of my results and expand upon the foundation I have laid by maintaining complete openness. In addition, I want to uphold the ethical norms of research by staying clear of any potential conflicts of interest. It is of the utmost importance to be open and honest about any potential conflicts of interest, and to take steps to reduce or eliminate any conflicts to the greatest extent feasible. This is due to the fact that conflicts of interest may put a damper on the integrity of research and lead to conclusions that are either skewed or not reflective of the whole. Reflecting on my actions that led to the disciplinary charges against me, I feel a deep sense of regret and disappointment in myself. It was during the quiz window of my recreational therapy class, LEI 3400, that I made a mistake by participating in a group chat with other students and posting an image of QUIZ #1. I now see that my acts were unethical and in violation of the criteria for doing research, which is something that I want to do in the future as part of my professional career. As a student, I consider it very necessary to uphold the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity in every facet of my educational experience. Cheating destroys the basic basis upon which academic standards are built (Ramberg & Modin, 2019). Not only is it dishonest, but it also interferes with the learning process and makes it more difficult. I have breached the concept of fairness, which is an essential component of the ethical norms that apply to research because I cheated. It is unacceptable for pupils to engage in unethical activities in order to obtain an unfair edge over their fellow classmates. It is possible

that the repercussions of my actions will have a detrimental impact on both my personal and professional development over the long term. My experience of being found guilty of cheating has left me with feelings of humiliation and disgrace. I feel like a fraud because of what I did. My credibility and reputation as a student have taken a hit as a result, and this may have a domino effect on the educational and professional prospects I have in the future. This experience has taught me that cheating may provide short-term gains, but it is not worth the long-term negative impacts that it can have on one's personal as well as professional life. I came to this conclusion as a result of the fact that although cheating may provide short-term gains, it is not worth the long-term. Steps to Improve As a result of my choices and their repercussions, I have given serious thought to the research ethics I want to uphold in the future. I have set goals for myself to follow to make sure that my conduct is always up to par with these expectations. The first step is for me to recognize and accept responsibility for my mistakes. Recognizing that cheating degrades the value of education and academic accomplishment is as crucial as recognizing that it is a violation of academic rules (Morgan, 2021). I need to realize that when I cheat, I undermine not just my own efforts but also those of my classmates and the academic community as a whole. Understanding the weight of my acts and their repercussions will strengthen my resolve to avoid repeating them in the future. Second, I must reflect on my past actions and apply what I have learned to my future actions. In order to prevent such mishaps, I must define what constitutes appropriate conduct. There are rules and regulations that I, as a student, am expected to learn and follow. Also, I must be cognizant of the repercussions that may result from my disobeying these rules and regulations. Furthermore, from now on, I am going to be thinking about my homework
differently. The pressure I put on myself to get decent marks has made me resort to dishonest methods. Going ahead, I want to give equal weight to the process of education as well as the final grade. Taking my time to learn the content and complete tasks on my own would help me not only succeed in class but also adhere to the rules of conduct for research. Building solid relationships is another crucial action I am doing. I have reached out to other students in my major to start a study group where we can all keep each other on track and be there for each other if we get stuck. In the future, I feel I will be able to resist temptation and make wiser choices if I have a solid support system of peers who share my beliefs and dedication to ethical conduct. As a last thought, I have considered how a lack of integrity may stunt my development in both my professional and personal life (Guerrero-Dib et al., 2020). As a result of cheating, I may find it difficult to earn the confidence of my peers and coworkers. Long-term, my career might suffer if I am unable to advance professionally via education and training. Because of this, I make it a priority to operate with honesty and integrity at all times and adhere to established norms of conduct in the field of research. Potential Impacts of a Lack of Integrity There are serious academic, emotional, and professional repercussions that may result from a lack of integrity at Florida International University. The reputation of Florida International University (FIU) is at stake, as is the institution's dedication to sustaining the highest standards of academic integrity (Holden et al., 2021). One's chosen sector of work may also suffer when a person lacks integrity (Guerrero-Dib et al., 2020). For instance, I want to build a profession in healthcare, where I believe honesty and transparency to be paramount. Because of the gravity of their responsibility, healthcare providers must always act with the utmost integrity
and professionalism. Loss of license or legal action may result from actions that damage patients' confidence in healthcare providers, such as plagiarism or dishonesty (Guerrero-Dib et al., 2020). A lack of integrity may have negative effects on one's professional reputation as well as on one's personal and professional relationships. If you cheat, lie, or steal in any situation, you should expect to lose the trust and respect of those closest to you. In a tight-knit business like healthcare, this may lead to a poor reputation that is hard to shake. Assume, for the sake of argument, that a healthcare worker has been caught cheating on a test or making up data in their practice. In such situation, they risk having others stop believing in them as an expert in their industry, which might hurt their reputation and make it difficult for them to get work in their chosen profession. Such an event may have far-reaching and far-from-unsurmountable negative effects on the person's personal and professional connections. Conclusion In conclusion, I have shared details about the academic dishonesty I committed in LEI 3400 at Florida International University. It was claimed that I had participated in a group chat and shared a picture of QUIZ #1 during the quiz window, both of which would constitute cheating. I have identified many activities I may take to address my behavior and avoid such problems in the future, including admitting my faults, accepting responsibility for my actions, asking for assistance when necessary, and developing a strategy to curb any future inappropriate behavior. I have also addressed the possible consequences of a lack of integrity at Florida International University, including harm to the institution's reputation and harm to the academic community's faith in its members. Integrity is essential to preserving professional connections and reputation, both of which might suffer if I lack it.
