HR5040 4 Introduction This is a reflective report on my chosen job specification which is a Business Manager at Vodafone. From this module I have developed on certain skills which I believe are essential when applying for this role. There are 5 competencies which are; Critical thinking, Resilience, Teamwork, Emotional intelligence and Career conversations. I have strengthened these through LinkedIn Learning and will discuss the relevance of those to the identified job. I will explain the link between the specific job requirements and competencies. The specification of being a Business Manager at Vodafone will be explored and how I anticipate that my skills shape me into an ideal candidate. Critical thinking A key part of becoming a business manager is identified in the job description as needing to be analytical as well as having attention to detail . Critical thinking is useful in a management role as it would aid me to find answers to people s disputes (Changwong et al, 2018). I understand that knowing how to think objectively or critically would pave the way to achieving my role as a business manager as you would need to think logically and in a way which best suits everybody s needs. As a manager in any profession, being able to problem-solve by critical thinking shows leadership. Developing this skill has helped me to focus, think rationally and not let emotions interfere when making decisions even though emotions can be useful at certain times. This part of the description relates strongly to my abilities enhanced throughout this module and prepares me for future opportunities. Resilience The requirement as a business manager also includes being able to multi-task and to deal with rapidly evolving priorities . Resilience is useful for this requirement as it refers to the ability to recover from challenges and adapting to changing environments (Ovans, 2015). Being a manager in the business world is a stressful role as changes in business are happening regularly and business can go downhill from time to time however, I am constantly working to improve and better myself which is why management is a good role for me. Moreover, with priorities changing and handling a lot of work I would be under a lot of pressure. Being a manager, it is expected to handle a lot of work with tight deadline, supervise employees and have high targets to meet which is a heavy burden (Meulenberg, 2019). This is where my acquired
HR5040 5 competence of resilience gives me an edge with employability as I would be able to handle pressure well by setting clear tasks. Also, thinking in a positive way can aid improve stress levels and conduct work in a calm and smooth manner. Teamwork/Career Conversations This next job description may apply to two different skills. The description suggests that an ideal manager should have expert-level written and verbal communication skills . Teamwork is necessary in a managerial role as it is a process which involves everyone ’s ability to achieve outstanding results as defined by Scarnati (2001, p. 5). This applies to these competencies as you need to be able to explain your view to others and listen to everyone s point of view. From this module I have reinforced my teamworking skills which equips me for this job role because I have learnt to use the strengths of others and work on weaknesses together. Career conversation can fit in with this description as this is a discussion with a person s manager to try and develop their career (Bárcenas, 2019). To carry out this effectively I should be a good communicator so that I can take positions such as a business manager or if another employee would like a promotion they would need to get their plans across clearly, so that whoever has authority over them can understand what they are asking. By being easy to communicate with, I am likely to build strong relationships with others. These skills enforced by a business manager would make people feel comfortable with work and to know that they can talk to their manager if ever they are in a difficult situation. Emotional Intelligence Another part of the job description for this role as business manager is to be able to maintain confidentiality and having experience managing company stakeholders is also another requirement, which I believe links well with emotional intelligence competency. This refers to having control over your behaviour and understanding other people s feelings. For managers to reduce stress at work they should firstly be respectful to everyone and show their responsibility by acting calmly rather than panicking, as this will raise emotions that can trigger other issues such as anxiety (Yarker et al, 2008). Managers should be emotionally intelligent as they can engage stakeholders and suit their expectations for the company.
HR5040 6 Moreover, learning how to develop this skill has helped me to understand my emotions, which is important during conditions of extreme pressure. Having a calm reaction to certain situations would allow me to come up with a straight-forward and reasonable solution and I trust that is what a person would expect from a good manager. Conclusion To sum up, I have faith in the skills gained from this module that they prepare me well for any profession in the future. They are all transferable skills which can be used in any position and shows to employers that I am aware of what is required in a managerial role. Having strengths in these areas shows a great deal of expertise which is what companies are looking for in leaders. This is because a good manager can improve the entire workforce as well as themselves which in return, assists the company to achieve their goals.
