Provide an example of a previous situation where you experienced change or were responsible for managing change. This could be either personal or professional. Before the pandemic, my daily routine was a juggle between work and school, both of which I attended in-person. However, as COVID-19 surged, both my classes and job shifted to a remote format almost overnight. Initially, it was a pretty steep hill to climb; we were so accustomed to just knocking on each other's doors if we had questions or needed a quick chat. The bigger hiccup came with accessing essential files that were previously only available through an on-campus drive. And soon we transitioned to using a VPN that allowed us to access the drive from off-campus locations, but this took awhile and it did not always work. It took a bit to get used to, but we managed. During this time, we also lost to a few GREAT colleagues who retired, and welcomed new faces, who we never met in person. It was quite the shift, and a lesson in flexibility and adaptability, to say the least! Based on the change management skills covered in this course, do you think you should have used a different approach for the example you described? Reflecting on it now with the knowledge from the course, employing a structured approach like the ADKAR model could have potentially eased our transition. We did somehow naturally hit the Awareness and Desire stages, realizing the need for change and wanting to adapt. Yet, I think we could have benefited from more deliberate actions in the Knowledge and Ability sectors - perhaps providing training sessions on using the VPN and fostering open discussions to address concerns and suggestions from the team. As for the Lewin's model, a planned 'Unfreeze' phase with structured communication and preparation could have possibly made the 'Change' phase smoother. Finally, using Kotter's 8-step process might have helped in creating a more inclusive vision and encouraging broader participation, making the new hires feel more integrated from the start. So yes, incorporating elements from these models could have possibly provided a smoother and more inclusive transition during that whirlwind time.
Are there any change management skills you found most relevant to your personal or professional life? How might you apply them moving forward? I found the ADKAR model particularly relevant since it breaks down the change process into smaller, more manageable steps, making it a bit more digestible when facing a big transition. I can totally see myself using it both at work and in personal situations where change is inevitable. Moving forward, I plan to consciously incorporate these structured approaches, taking time to navigate through each stage, and hopefully, making transitions smoother and more successful. It's like giving myself a roadmap to navigate through the complexities of change, which honestly, sounds quite reassuring! At work, this method could really simplify bringing in new tools or changes, making sure everyone's not just in the loop, but also finding it easy to blend into their usual tasks. On a personal note, it could be like having a friendly guide when settling into a new area or switching up my lifestyle, helping me ease in with a bit more know-how instead of just winging it. Moving forward, I plan to consciously incorporate these structured approaches, taking time to navigate through each stage, and hopefully, making transitions smoother and more successful. It's like giving myself a roadmap to navigate through the complexities of change. less 3 Unread 3 Unread 3 Replies 3 Replies 4 Views 4
