DISCUSSION WEEK 1 MGMT 670 - 1. Part 1 of your response: Visit one of the websites listed below and locate the company's vision and/or mission statement(s). Critique the adequacy and merit of the company's vision and mission. Be sure to list the effective elements and the shortcomings. 2. Part 2 of your response: Draft at least 3 strategic objectives for the company based on what you learned from Part 1. Be sure to make the objectives SMART. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a renowned organization known for treating children with childhood cancers with little to no cost to families. The organization's mission statement has been consistent throughout the years with a newly developed vision statement and are stated in the FY 22-27 Strategic Plan (St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 2021). Vision : To accelerate progress against catastrophic disease at a global level. Through this week's reading we have determined that a company's vision statement must be clear, bold, and a prediction of what it hopes to become (Vision, mission, and goals, 2012). The vision statement must also be impactful towards the organization's stakeholders, donors, customers, and employees. I find the vision statement above to mostly meet the requirements of a successful vision statement. The vision statement is clear and understandable, it is bold with addressing the fight against catastrophic disease globally and provides some measure of the company's foresight. While not necessarily a shortcoming if the organization's intention is to dip its toes into new waters, the vision does not specify pediatric patients or prevention which is a major part of the organization's core. However, the organization is beginning a new study, St. Jude Life, focused on treating and maintaining healthy lifestyles of former St. Jude patients since 1962. Then perhaps the vision statement is a foreshadow in how the organization plans to slightly shift by incorporating adult patients. If this vision statement stood alone then I would think it would be disconnected from the organization's mission statement. However, the vision
description "St. Jude has the obligation and the ability to help children around the world. Because of St. Jude’s success, we have the opportunity and the responsibility to establish an agenda that is aimed toward achieving the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital" connects the two. Mission : To advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. As we've learned, the important elements of a solid mission statement are memorable, short, inspiring, and market focused. The St. Jude missions statement is excellent and I do not believe it has any shortcomings. It is short, clear, inspiring, and market focused on pediatric diseases. Additionally, it is memorable because it is likely one could assume this mission statement belongs to St. Jude. This mission statement clearly states what the organization's role within society is and why stakeholders should invest in the company. Considering St. Jude relies heavily on donations to continue operations, it is important the mission statement be as impactful and memorable as possible. Strategic objectives are goals developed by the organization to achieve its mission and vision. These goals should be specific, measurable, aggressive, realistic, and time-bound. We also use this goal setting method in my workplace when developing employee work elements. Three strategic objectives I developed for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital are: 1) Expand long-term housing facility for family's by building one new domiciliary structure consisting of 50 fully furnished, 2 bedroom apartments by the end of 2026. 2) Expand global collaborations by forming international research teams to share data and perspectives on pediatric catastrophic diseases by 2026. 3) Offer evening childcare services for children under 5 by December 2024, tailored to support single parents and dual- employee households at St. Jude working night shifts.
