Your Name: Gennifer Noy
Your Partner’s Name: Val Ngo-Nguyen
Purpose:
To explain your topic to the members of the group in clear, simple, informal, easy-to-
understand language. You will work in pairs and you will need to take turns (Pair 1 goes first
while the other people observe / listen and keep time, then Pair 2 goes while the other people
observe / listen and keep time). Each person should submit a separate document.
Suggested Structure:
Split up into groups of 2. Join your partner using a different Zoom link if
you are working remotely. Spend 20 minutes per person and the last 10 minutes doing your
reflections.
Answer the questions below. Try to stick to 2 pages (short, concise responses are good).
Write your PARTNER’s topic in the form of a question (one sentence):
-
What are the factors that influence the use of of code-switching in bilingual children?
Why is this topic important/interesting?
-
Bilingual studies is becoming more prominent in studies of early language aquisition.
This topic explores socio-cultural factors that influence code-switching in young children
who are bilingual. There are also some interesting pieces of the effect of parent input on
amount of code-switching used as well as the learning benefits of being bilingual
(bilingualism & code-switching as a learning skill).
Ask your partner to describe one MAIN THEME from their articles. Give this theme a heading
(2-3 words) and summarize the theme in 2-3 sentences:
-
“Trajectory of Code-Switching”
-
Code-switching is complex bilingual behavior that is affected by various factors
(characteristics of the speaker, the interlocutor, and broader sociolinguistic
context, proficiency in the language, parent input, age). Code-switching patterns
change as children produce a bigger vocabulary in each language.
Ask your partner to describe ANOTHER MAIN THEME from their articles. Give this theme a
heading (2-3 words) and summarize the theme in 2-3 sentences.
-
“Bilingual Linguistic Capabilities”
-
Code-switching is used to achieve a specific communication function –
socializing, conversation, performing speech acts, story-telling, and expressing
emotions. Bilingual are able to differentiate between languages which allows
them to use their languages in context-specific ways.
Is there an alternative perspective/hypothesis? Ask your partner to describe the evidence for the
alternative. Give this theme a heading (2-3 words) and summarize the alternative in 3-4
sentences.
-
Nature v. Nurture Argument
-
If code-switching is influenced biologically or socially. There are also arguments
that suggest cognitive control plays a role in code-switching and that the ability to
code-switch is closely related to cognitive processing. On the other hand, some
argue that parietal language use and code-switching is one of the biggest factors
in a bilingual child’s development.
How can future research help answer this question?
-
Looking into some more biological/cognitive/processing factors that pertain to code-
switching. Clear and foundational knowledge on socio-cultural factor and might be
valuable to consider these alternative arguments as well since language acquisition
varies so much.
ACTIVITY REFLECTION QUESTIONS (answer below):
How did this activity help you to simplify and clarify the focus of your paper?
By describing my idea to someone else while trying to be concise, and having to understand the
main ideas of my partners paper, I found that I was able to hone in on what is really important to
know in my own paper. I also realized, I may be shifting my main topic ever so slightly, to
encompass more age groups. I clarified what I need to look for in my research, and that shifting
the age of my focus group for children acquiring ASL is important to get more relevant research.
Describe any challenges you encountered (individually or with your group).
I struggled to describe what qualified as a deaf infant, in terms of my study, such as is if the kids
have to be born deaf to be included in studies or not, and if that means total hearing loss.
Additionally, I struggled to separate main ideas from each other, and I think it is important that
we talked it through.
Do you have suggestions for improving this activity?
Maybe at the end, if there is a question to answer for one another on paper where we can
describe one thing that was unclear to us. I think that it would help me to know what parts of my
topic are not coming across clearly and concisely in the way I describe them.
