Case Study – Evelyn Intervention
Introduction:
Evelyn is a 22-month-old child, who has been referred to you as a Speech Language Pathologist
because she is not talking. Your assessment and observations indicated that her expressive
language skills were at the 12-15 month level.
Treatment Plan Worksheet:
Treatment Goal:
The goal for Evelyn is to increase the number of different words she uses. Evelyn will be able to
match 10 similar pictures in pairs with 80% accuracy in 4 out of 5 opportunities.
Word Class: Nouns
Target Words: Cat, Shirt, Tree, Ball, Table, Bed, Dog, Book, Cup, and Shoe
Intervention Activities:
Object Labeling Game with Pictures (or 3D objects):
Materials:
Individual pictures (or objects) of each of the target words.
(Cat, Shirt, Tree, Ball, Table, Bed, Dog, Book, Cup, and Shoe)
Ziploc Bag to hold pictures in (or basket to hold objects).
Instructions:
Put the 10 pictures into the Ziploc bag (or objects into the bucket).
Sit with Evelyn at the table (or floor if she is more comfortable there).
Take a picture (or object) out of the bag (or basket) and label the picture.
When labeling the picture, encourage Evelyn to try and repeat the name of the object
after you have said it.
If she cannot repeat the word, start at providing models of the word. This would be a full
verbal model. For example, grab the picture of the “Ball” and say “Ball.”
When Evelyn can repeat the name of the object, begin to lower the use of models from
full verbal to partial verbal. To do this, a full verbal would be “ball,” and then move to a
partial verbal by saying the “B” sound only to hint at the word “ball.”
When Evelyn can independently produce the target word at 80% correct for 3 days
straight, begin to change the pictures (or objects) of the target word so that she can
discriminate and label pictures that are the same object but have different looks.
Treasure Hunt Exploration:
Materials:
Small Classroom or Office.
Bucket with a handle.
Small toys or objects for each of the target words in the activity.
(Cat, Shirt, Tree, Ball, Table, Bed, Dog, Book, Cup, and Shoe)
Pictures of objects that represent each target word in the activity.
Instructions:
Before Evelyn arrives, take the 10 objects that are being used to represent the target
words and hide them around the classroom.
When Evelyn arrives for intervention, go over the 10 pictures being used to represent the
target words.
Give Evelyn the bucket and give instructions to go on a treasure hunt to find the objects

that are like the pictures.
When she finds an object, label the item, and encourage her to repeat the objects name
after you, and then place it in the bucket.
To increase her vocabulary, attempt to discuss in detail the objects that she is
looking for on the scavenger hunt. For example, “We are looking for a
small, red
ball.”
When she can independently label the items as she looks for them, trade the objects for
similar looking objects to prevent rote answering.
Developmental Skills and Sequence:
Increased Vocabulary:
Evelyn will be able to increase her vocabulary use in the class of
nouns, by adding the 10 target words (Cat, Shirt, Tree, Ball, Table, Bed, Dog, Book, Cup,
and Shoe) and other similar nouns.
Two-Word Phrases:
She will potentially be able to begin using two-word phrases like
“give me” or “I want.” This goal is intended for around the 24-month mark, so this will
continue to be worked on with a growing vocabulary.
Comprehension Skills:
Evelyn will begin to comprehend a larger set of words when
spoken to her, this is observable by giving directions to see if she follows them. She may
not be able to repeat all the words, but her comprehension levels will increase.
