Outline This course provides an introduction to the principles of general linguistics for beginners in the field. There is an emphasis on synchronic linguistic analysis (phonology, syntax, semantics) with a brief examination of historical/comparative linguistics, and language acquisition. 3. Required: “Introduction to Linguistic Science.” Mark Hale & Madelyn Kissock. Readings will be posted on Moodle. Additional sources (not required, but recommended): "An Introduction to Language." Fromkin V., Rodman R. & Hyams N. Wadsworth Cengage Learning "Contemporary Linguistics, An Introduction." O'Grady & al., Bedford/St. Martin's 4. Requirements Homework Assignments 20% (4x 5%) Each assignment will be posted on Moodle a week before its deadline. Your homework is due online via Moodle on the Friday of the week that it is due before 23:59. Late homework is not accepted. Quizzes 10% Ten pop-quizzes which are semi-scheduled. If a quiz is missed, there is no make-up possibility. The main function of these quizzes is to assure students do their readings BEFORE class, and also as a means to take attendance. Term Paper 10% The term paper is due in class on Monday Dec. 04. You will compare two languages that you know (e.g., your native language and another language with which you have some experience with). Your only sources of information for writing the paper will be what you have learned in the class & from the readings, along with your intuitions about the languages. You may use a language textbook if necessary. There will be more information about the paper in a few weeks, along with instructions on how to organize and write your paper. Exams 60% (3x 20%) Three in-class exams. Multiple choice questions. Exam 1- Introduction, Phonetics, Phonology Exam 2- Morphology, Syntax Exam 3- Semantics, Sociolinguistics, Historical linguistics AND all previous material. 5. Policies a) Do the assigned readings before each class. b) You are responsible for knowing what is due when. c) When sending an email, please include the course number in the subject line so that I know which class you are from, e.g. [Ling 200 A] Question about allophones. d) There are no bonus exam/project/work for this class at the end of the semester. There are no make- up exams, nor make-up Quizzes. e) Late registered students should make up for all missed material within a week after the late registration date . Late registration is not an excuse for taking a make-up exam or getting an extension for assignments. f) Grades will be changed only for clerical errors and will not be done on a curve except for the low ends. g) Students suspected cheating or plagiarizing will be reported to the Dean of Students Office. h) If you have special needs, please let me know as soon as possible so that I can make proper accommodations for you. 6.
