Reading Reflection #5
After reading the chapter in the text, explain why reading fluency is an
important component of literacy instruction.
According to the text, fluency is “the ability to read rapidly, smoothly, without many
errors, and with appropriate expression.” (pg. 259) Moreover, there are two ways
that it can be assessed which includes oral fluency and silent reading fluency. In
terms of the oral phenomenon, it’s simple because one asks the student to read
orally, and you can hear clearly if they can read with fluency or not. On the other
hand, in terms of silent reading, one can tell if the student reads relatively fast,
without struggling, and with good understanding of what they have read. However,
it is important to highlight that fluency is more than just automatic, rapid word
recognition. It goes beyond that because it requires prosody which is the “ability to
read with proper phrasing, intonation, and stress.” (pg. 263) Therefore, teachers
have a responsibility to help their students master reading fluency. It’s an important
component of literacy instruction and they have to help them in different ways so
students can learn to read texts accurately, quickly, and with expression. One way
this can be done is by teachers providing independent reading time or scheduling
activities that include scaffolded/guided reading, vocabulary development, word
study, and comprehension strategy instruction. Another way is motivating
independent reading by providing students with an appropriate source of
information that consists of good books and interesting authors. Another way is
teachers making reading materials readily available and helping students select the
right material. Teachers can also encourage “out-of-school” reading, partner reading
in class, and obviously assessing students’ reading fluency overtime by keeping
track of it. Overall, reading fluency is an important component of literacy instruction
because it builds a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. It truly
allows students to focus on what the text is saying and make connections between
what the reading and their own background knowledge. However, none of this can
be achieved without the proper scaffolding and teaching of educators.
