ETH/120: Cultural Diversity in The United States
Professor Pamela Spence
Throughout the world, one can see a colorful mix of people of diverse backgrounds and ages from many levels of society. There are people from different religious backgrounds, different racial identities, different ethnic identities from all over the world who speak different languages and celebrate different holidays in every corner of the earth. It is our culture that shapes who we are. Taking part in it shapes our identity, it influences our behavior, and it makes us who we are as a person. People are brought together by culture in celebrations and grief. I believe the world would be a much duller and sadder place if there were no culture and no cultural diversity.
There is a quality of diversity known as cultural diversity, sometimes referred to as multiculturalism, which is a mix of diverse cultures. Diversity of culture is a system that acknowledges and respects the existence and presence of diverse groups of people within a society as an integral part of its culture. During the integration process, the system recognizes and values everyone's socio-cultural differences, and encourages them to celebrate them. Diversity of cultures also inspires everyone within a society to play an active role in empowering
their own cultural identity and that of others as well, by providing a welcoming environment for them to do so. It is important to keep in mind that the phrase cultural diversity does not only refer to or refer to issues pertaining to race or ethnicity. Culture diversity in the workplace also refers to an environment where people are recognized and respected for their differences in terms of their interests, talents, and skills.
When we look at other cultures through a lens that is inclusive and diverse, it is possible to explore and understand how they operate and function. As we open our eyes to diverse cultures in the world, we can see the world in a different light and from others' point of view. It is possible to see, appreciate, and understand more if we take the time to look. I believe that understanding is a crucial step before accepting and appreciating. It is the same with other cultures around the world, which is why understanding them is so important. Despite the fact that we are unable to understand why certain cultures do the things they do, we are able to
acknowledge that it is their custom and not discriminate against it as they have done in the past.
A culture can be described as a set of beliefs, norms, behaviors, and values that are deemed acceptable by a particular group of people. In contrast, identity is about knowing what you consider to be true and acceptable in your own life. For us to belong to a community, we subconsciously interpret and incorporate signals from the world around us into our own identity so we can form a sense of belonging. There is no doubt that your cultural identity is one
of the most important components of your personal identity (and worldview) that emerge as you absorb, interpret, and adopt (or reject) the beliefs, values, behaviors, and norms of the communities in which you live and interact.
