Some linguists integrate phonetics into the study of phonology. Phonology formulates and investigates hypotheses regarding the changes and adjustments observed in speech sounds and sound systems over time. For instance, it examines how English words such as "sea" and "see," historically having different vowel sounds based on their spelling, have evolved to share a similar pronunciation in modern usage. How Phonology can be applied to literacy development Understanding how sounds work in language is very important. Good at speaking and understanding a language with clear grammar helps improve reading skills. Even though reading is essential in school, writing well is also crucial. So, being good at both reading and writing is the most important thing to learn in school. Turning sounds into written words is an excellent example of hearing and speaking sounds essential for reading and writing. Morphology The discipline of etymology explores how new words are created in various languages and how existing words transform based on contextual usage. As a native speaker of your language, you likely possess an intuitive knack for effortlessly assimilating and understanding newly coined terms daily.

How morphology can be applied to literacy development Incorporating inflectional prefixes is fundamental in teaching basic grammar and significantly enhances children's reading and writing skills. For instance, adding suffixes such as "s," "er," and "est" to words without altering their part of speech demonstrates the impact of these linguistic elements. This concept becomes evident when considering "plural" and "most." Syntax The study of syntax encompasses a detailed examination of how linguistic units, such as words, phrases, and sentences, are intricately structured from more minor constituents. It delves into the specific arrangements of word order, the intricate web of grammatical relations, the hierarchical organization of sentences, linguistic agreement, the underlying causes of cross-linguistic variation, and the deep-seated connection between form and meaning, also known as semantics. Furthermore, diverse schools of thought in syntax bring forth varied starting points and overarching objectives, contributing to the wealth of perspectives and insights within this field of study. How syntax can be applied to literacy development Understanding the function of various grammatical elements within sentences, such as parts of speech and linguistic references, is crucial for young children's comprehension.
