Is it ethical for state governments to be promoting gambling, in the form of lottery scholarships, for educational gain?
I do not think it is ethical for state governments to promote lottery scholarships. I personally tried
this tactic and found it overwhelming and misleading. Emma Mincks, author of “The Pros and Cons of Lottery Scholarships” said it best “A lottery scholarship involves financial aid being granted to a certain number of students drawn at random; sort of like the Willie Wonka golden ticket but for a chance to get funding for college” (Mincks, 2018). There are many stipulations that students are not aware of. For example, the scholarships may not cover your first semester of
college until you prove to them that you can hold your grades and GPA. Families and students may still struggle to cover books, extra fees, and supplies, “students with a minimal income or family support may still be unable to attend college that first semester or meet the scholarship requirements” (Minicks, 2018). If a student does not meet the school’s requirements or the scholarship requirements after the first semester and has to drop out, some states propose that students should pay back the scholarship, which puts them in an even bigger financial problem. Last year, Ohio created the Vax-a-million cash prize and would award residents who have been vaccinated against the coronavirus a scholarship. The 5 chosen winners will receive $1 million dollars, well over the tuition, and the other 5 winners will choose a full scholarship to a public Ohio college or university. I do not think scholarships and prizes should be based on someone’s vaccination status. In higher education, I believe colleges and universities should award scholarships based on grades, GPA, volunteer work, income status, and not on luck. Bischoff, L. A. (2021, May 19). Ohio’s vaccine lottery includes $1M prizes, 5 full scholarships. USA Today, 04D.
