Part Two: During previous course work this author researched the professional development (PD) options offered through Nation Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET). Not only are the PD options vast through NASET, but the ability also to work towards board certification will assist in long term career goals. Specifically, the PDs offered on Autism, Early Intervention/Preschool, Intellectual Disability, and Non-Verbal are all applicable to both this author’s current coursework but would be immediately employable in the classrooms where she works. Participating in action research within the classroom is an ongoing process for any Special Education educator. Understanding that both the challenge for the student and the solution or supports put in place for the students will and must be individualized indicates that strategies are constantly evolving as data emerges. Failure to employ action research within this environment will
negatively impact desired outcomes and will contribute to teacher burnout (Billingsley et al., 2020).
Communication amongst Special Education educators is vital to sharing of practices. One method of this would be to take advantage of PD sessions to present or share evidenced-based practices (EBP) within the Special Education department. Capitalizing on sharing the use of EBPs in the classroom, modifications made to these strategies and create a more appropriate fit is demonstrating the Protege Effect (Stock, 2019). Additionally, by using this method and encouraging discourse among peers it will increase the likelihood of improving accommodations that could be made going forward.
