Discussion 6 – Response 2 Hey Brian, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! As for your post, I agree with what offenders use social media for, however, they also use it to taunt law enforcement, and depending on the type of offender can use it to stalk their victims. Social media has become a “tool” for offenders to utilize when committing heinous acts. For example, looking online right now there was a story posted about 12 hours ago where a North Lincolnshire man used social media sites to prey on teenage girls, or in 2019 in New Jersey 16 child predators used social media to lure kids. One of the accused in that specific story was a police officer (Katersky, 2019). Social Media has become this tool for these monsters to use as they see fit because even though law enforcement can use social media as well, it is such a vast world with technology that it’s hard to stay on top of all of this. While law enforcement uses this to watch, catch, and investigate all types of crimes, offenders are getting smarter and using social media to commit their crimes. While there are bad sides to the use of social media there are also upsides. For starters, law enforcement also uses social media to help in investigations and stay connected to their communities. In the last couple of years, more and more police departments have utilized social media to show the public the “human” side of these departments. While the news outlets like to showcase the bad, these departments use many different social media platforms to show the good side. They posted dance videos, lip sync videos, K9 videos, and more. These videos helped not just their specific communities but, the public see a different side of law enforcement. While yes, law enforcement uses social media to help catch offenders and be transparent. They also utilize it to show their compassion and that just because some officers are bad, doesn’t mean that they all are. I stated this in my original post, social media is a double-edged sword. While there are many upsides to law enforcement using social media there are also downsides. Thank you, Chelsea References: Katersky, A.
