Generational Differences In The Criminal Justice System CJA/395 Shantel Rahmin Introduction Law enforcement agencies along with every criminal justice organization system, they all work very closely with the community. In every criminal justice agency and organization there needs to be structure and this structure is created through management. Management in criminal justice plays a critical role due its branches of justice that needs to be communicated effectively and helps in managing expectations and results. (Criminal Justice Management Creates Opportunities to Lead, 2018). Ensuring that the procedures and policies are being followed that is very crucial in management. Along with management playing a crucial role but, the law enforcement agency is also an important group to the criminal justice organization. In this paper I will talk about the important leadership roles, the different police rankings, and the generational differences. I hope by the end of this paper, you will have a better understanding on the criminal justice system.
Leadership Roles/ Aspects Law enforcement face challenges in their daily roles such as, training officers to understand their police roles and staying safe while doing their job effectively. There are some aspects when it comes to any type of management and leadership in a criminal justice system. Departments and criminal justice agencies explore candidate’s personal aspirations before recruiting them. When recruiting new officers, there is an interview and shaping test that is done and it’s an important way to capture how they are on a spectrum level. Upon hiring, one may ask “what can they expect from this type of profession.” Departments need to accommodate each millennials learning style because it can help their training program for the next set of recruits. The FTO program within the program that happens in the community colleges have spent a large amount on instructors to help with the different types of learning styles. Law enforcement Chiefs within the department will state that hiring new recruits for their department is not necessarily their role in their department but it’s the management role within the department. To keep new recruits, it has been found that when being offered the opportunity for training has helped the program grow stronger. However, In some states and counties there are smaller departments that may not have enough officers to make these types of accommodations (Eldrige,2012). Roles and Ranks Law enforcement agencies within the United States have many ranks and roles and can vary between departments. Each position within the department has promotions and rankings. In order to get a rank or promotion, officers have to have certain amount of time with each level within the department, take exams and then be interviews with their superior officer before they can be
considered for the next police rankings. The rankings that an officer can receive are, police officer, detective, corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, chief and lastly, commissioner are all rankings that one can get within their career. A law enforcement officer is one of the most common sworn in officer withing any metropolitan department. Performing variety roles that may include, patrolling, investigating crime scenes and helping out by participating in the community. Now, Detectives are assigned to a special division to work on gang activities, narcotics and any type of crime that is specific to a high crime. When one becomes a corporal, they may still investigate and patrol the community. They may also take any police sergeant duties in case of one’s absence. Sergeants will supervise and take roles such an investigator to ensure that the equipment’s and personnel is at department standards. Lieutenants will attend meetings and be on many committees that may be related to their unit of command. Captains will then manage a specific division within the department such as homicide. They will evaluate one’s teams and performance by seeing ones written report from an incident or crime. The rank of a police captain is one of the highest ranks that one law enforcement officer can receive by Civil Services. Ranks that are above a captain must appointed by the chief of police. The Chief of police serves the bureau commander with investigations, patrol and or support. The Chief also manages the department along with being responsible for maintaining the effectiveness of the operations within the department. Different Generations The new generation of law enforcement officers seemed to be less concerned about the invasions of privacy issues because they were raised by the social networking techniques that have eschew one’s privacy.
