Before I enrolled in this class, what I thought cybersecurity was that cybersecurity is the
defense against cyberthreats for systems connected to the internet, including their data,
software, and hardware. To prevent unwanted access to servers and other electronic systems,
both individuals and businesses employ this. Cybersecurity can offer an effective defense
against malicious assaults intended to gain access to, alter, delete, destroy, or extort sensitive
data and systems belonging to a business or person. Security measures are essential in
preventing cyberattacks that try to take down or impair a system or device's functionality.

Before enrolling in this course, I viewed cybersecurity as only hacking, counter-hacking and
viruses. However, after completing module 1, I learned that cybersecurity is about taking every
step to prevent data being stolen, breached, or deleted. I learned that cybersecurity concerns
begin at the internal level with employees as they are the primary target for hackers and

Learning just how much the employee also has to do to be safe from "cyber threats" was
the biggest thing I learned. I didn't realize how much the employee really needs to be
vigilant about staying safe and keeping up on training.

security was about keeping yourself and your data safe across computer networks. After
completing module 1 I still think the same thing about cybersecurity.

The biggest difference between my understanding of cybersecurity before and now is how
much of a process setting up and maintaining cybersecurity is. I already knew that setting up
cybersecurity takes time and it is important to hire professionals, but I didn't realize how
important it is to maintain it. Maintaining cybersecurity means employee training on the latest
cybersecurity threats, newer protection methods, routine checks, etc.

Hi Ryker,
I think it's worth noting that there are just a few events where more security, leads too
much issues , leads to bad human practice, leads to worst security. The classic is
businesses using bad password policies that drive people to writing their passwords.

To my understanding before cybersecurity is often a field that is always present. From my
understanding now, it is in fact always present, even in less professional/less business
oriented things like personal life for some people.
From what I learned from the video, the internet is effectively always going to have some
degree of risk, and that the focus of cybersecurity from what I interpret it as from the video, is
mitigating the risks as much as possible. The risks cannot be truly removed completely as
doing so requires very immense measures and authentication that although you can use it,
you would effectively be giving up a decent chunk of information to whoever is regulating it to
know you are the one using it. That being said most can make things intended to make it more
safe and not as possibly vulnerable, whether it be educating users how to be safe such as to
avoid giving away too much personal information and/or built in things some companies try to
manage like anti-virus, firewalls, etc.
Overall, cybersecurity is an important thing to be aware of in daily life due to how bad the
effects of not practicing it at all/safe enough for oneself can have numerous negative
implications and/or consequences.

After reviewing Module 1, I understand that cybersecurity is more than what meets the eye. I
learned that there are layers to security, from securing software to network security to physical
security. I learned that threat actors can be external and internal. Their motives can be
everything from unintentional to financially motivated to politically affiliated to simply wanting
revenge. The social engineering unit was the most interesting to me. Where I worked, we had
lots of efforts made to combat phishing because of how harmful it can be.

Hi Penelope,
At the different companies I have worked at I also have seen efforts to combat phishing by
exposing what the effect of it could be. We get trainings to complete annually or quarterly.
We get "fake" phishing emails that we have to be vigilant of and report. I work in the health

industry; I get to see how levels of security are implemented against cyber-attacks. Having
so much access to health records as well as medical systems, I see how hospitals and
medical staff have to follow rules about network usage. At times it seems excessive, but
many do not see the potential of being attacked by both an internal and external source.

My first thought of cybersecurity was firewall network security for devices. Now learning more
about security and how it is so important to protect incoming and outgoing network traffic. They
essentially act as protective between a private internal network and the public internet. It’s very
scary that one breach can expose your personal information to millions of people. These
breaches have a big strong financial impact on people and companies. Security and safety
consulate to many things including financial data, consistent housing, and unauthorized
access and theft. Cybersecurity helps protect us from hackers and malicious malware attacks.

Cyber security means just protecting your data from unwanted intrusions. Anti-virus, malware,
and rootkit scanners like Malwarebytes or Kaspersky should be layered on top of each other. Educating anyone who is allowed to access your data on social engineering and proper
password practices as well as any other security concerns related to the specific network is a
good idea.

One thing that I have learned is the many precautions there are with security that I did not
bother to think about. Something as simple as a reception desk is actually a security measure
to ensure that people that are not supposed to be in the building can not enter. Another thing I
learned is how easy it is to fall for malicous links especially when in the workplace. You think
you can trust your coworkers to know the same as you and not share malicous files with you.

I had never thought about the terrifying thought experiment as described in the video. I'm learning a lot about cybersecurity, but it's easy to oversimplify it by describing the deletion
of data, spreading of viruses, or stealing of information - it's also the infrastructure and
procedures that keep these systems in place. (https://

My thoughts about cybersecurity before watching the video are similar to the ones in the video.
Before i enrolled into this class, my perspective about cybersecurity was finding was to secure
network and systems from possible threats. This would include securing devices on the
network such as routers, switches, and other end devices. what comes to mind is a layered
security, where you fortify every layer from the physical all the way up to the application layer.
After watching the video, I understood that cybersecurity is securing any device that has the
ability to communicate with other devices and can be susceptible to security threats. Before, I
was thinking more about devices that commonly make up a network which are routers,
switches, and computer, but did not consider smart tv's, smart car, smart watches and other
smart devices.

encryption to prevent manipulation and authorization to control access to the data. After
finishing the first module, I still think this is a large part of cybersecurity, but I also think there's
a lot more to it. It seems obvious now, but physical security - controlling access to the actual
device itself - is another important part of cybersecurity that I hadn't thought of before. Looking at my everyday life, I don't know that I appreciate the importance that cybersecurity
plays. I use Google Home and many smart devices, and I (as well as probably most users)
take for granted both how much data I am generating that can be exploited and also the sheer
number of that, if hacked, could provide access to my home network. With the prevalence of
cloud computing as well, it's scary to think about the amount of power that a single company
has in ensuring that attackers don't gain access to my passwords, pictures, browsing history,
computer files, and all the other personal information. (https://

Before completing this module, my idea of cybersecurity was to ensure the security of device
information by constant reinforcement through surveillance and updates to avoid any harm at
all costs. After completing this module, I've learned that vulnerability is built into a device, and
living in a world where technology is on the rise, constant effort is to be made because an
attack can happen at any time.

As I watched the video above, I gathered some information in regards to how cybersecurity is
seen within an outsiders perspective. Cybersecurity is one of the fastest growing careers out
there and they require delicacy within their line of work. It's crazy to think how people are
getting affected by those who commit crimes like cybercrimes. Before taking this class, I
relevantly had an idea of what cybersecurity is and the notions which go into it, Its crazy to
think you can get hacked by just being in your home using your own computer. By the
advancement of technology and intellectual knowledge, it gives hacktivists a greater chance to
get your information and use it for their own gain. After completing the module 1 material, I
learned the overall basics of what cybersecurity is, how easy it is for individuals to get hacked
and how we can take measures to protect ourselves from cybercriminals.

Module 1 was a great refresher of what I knew about cybersecurity. It was very informative to
what other companies have faced when they encounter a security event. I currently work as an
IT Contractor for various health organizations nationwide. Part of my job entails ensuring
systems are running as intended and kept as secure as possible. Part of my day is to ensure
end users are not violating company policy and educate when possible or escalate to their
manager. The other part is approving or denying access to resources. Even though we have implemented many security trainings, a secure desk policy, BYOD
policies and physical access controls, we still find end users connecting their personal devices
in the private network instead of the public network. In some cases, we find them sharing the
private network with patients. Some of the unique questions or request I get:
Can I connect patient's PS5 to the TV in the room?
I need to be able to listen to Spotify when I'm working, can you please add the app as
trusted application?
I need access to YouTube because is really slow at night?
Yesterday, I had a high ranking doctor that was upset that his company issued computer
did not allow him to connect a flash drive. I advised that we cannot due to security reasons
as well as educating him on the alternatives (cloud) where he could save his files. Just as
this week's module taught us, he first started super friendly asking all kinds of questions

Cybersecurity is prevalent to our daily lives and it's an important topic to know and understand.
While viewing the video, i notated how important cybersecurity is to those working in the field,
and why it's important to keep your devices and everything safe. Cyber attacks can happen at
any time and anywhere, and after viewing the materials in Module 1, I came to understand
how cyber attacks are bound to happen, what steps we can take to deter it, and cautions
needed while using any devices. An example can be being at work and you getting a malicious
email with a link. That's one of the ways they can attack your device is the sender pretending
to be that company and they would send a link and make you click on that link. From there,
thats how cyber criminals are able to obtain your information and other things relevant to that
individual. (http

Even while I was working at a small company as a technician dispatcher, we would always
get these phishing, virus, etc. emails that we would hear from IT not to click. They were
always vigilant on network security, but every now and then you would get these weird
emails I just knew not to click. Then IT would send out saying don't click the link and
delete the email. However, some people weren't so lucky and those who clicked the link
had the walk of shame to IT to ask for help. It didn't happen regularly, but it happened a lot
more than I ever thought it would. (https://

Network security is crucial for protecting your personal information like credit cards,

should be built on. However, each layer is built so that in case one fails the others can still
possibly stop the incoming threats. Not everyone thinks of how complex our security in
everyday items are and what it would be like if they were open networks. Everyone could just
take a peek into someone else's life by watching what they do online, see purchases, online
posts, and much more personal information. Yet, it still happens to companies and people with
strict security standards. Sometimes that person never finds out until it's far too late or maybe
they never do. Overall, every company and home should have multiple layers of security to
protect sensitive information and assets from incoming threats. (https://

I thought what most people thought cybersecurity was when I first heard about it. It was
virtually all of the show Mr. Robot and finding hackers and bringing them to justice. I know now
that this is rare, and cybersecurity is mostly a team of people acting as the white blood cells of
companies and keeping the sickness off their network and reducing threats to their daily
actions.
