words.
1.2. What are the requirements for compliance and conformance
according to National Construction Code (NCC) for installing wall tiles?
Write your answer in 30-50 words.
1.3. Mention the Australian Standard for mosaic tiles. What is the
standard spacing for wall tiles?
Satisfactory
response
Yes ☐
No ☐
1.1 These refer to the national set budiling technical requirements that guide on the required design,
construction and performance of buildings for example, plumbing and drainage systems thata re
applicable in such construction sites.
1.2
It is a requirements that all the tiling materials that are employed in the tiling process to be
deemed fit for purpose as guided under the NCC. It is a legal requirement by the NCC that the
company provides the evidence of suitability of the tiling materials as a demonstration that a
material, design or construction meets Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) Provision under the law. 1.3 AS 3958.1
The standard spacing for wall tiles is 2mm or 3mm.
Q2:
Discuss the purpose workplace quality policies and standards for
mosaic tiles in 50-100 words. Satisfactory
response
Yes ☐
No ☐
The workplace quality polciies and procedures provide the guidelines that should be followed when
installing the mosaic tiles in any construction site in Australia. This means the work will be done as
per the guidelines given to achieve the desired quality of the project thus adherence to the National
Constriuction Code and relevant regulations, such as Australian standard, internal company quality
policy and standard, and manufacturer specifications for the installation of the mosaic tiles.
Q3:
Discuss the tiling material qualities, characteristics,
preparation requirements, techniques, application and
limitation of the following tiling materials in 150-200 words
each:
1.
Adhesive types and classifications
2.
Grout types, including epoxy grout.
Satisfactory response
Yes ☐
No ☐
3.1 On the tiling material qualities and as per the GOST 56387, ISO 13007/AS4992 CE, and UNI EN
12004, we have the adhesive types and classfications grouped into three main classes that include
the simple adhesive (class C0) , normal adhesive (class C1) and improved adhesive (class C2). On the
characteristics of the required adhesives for tiling purposes, the adhesive chosen should be usable
Unit Code: CPCCWF3006 Student Pack V1.0 Page 8

Student Pack
with all type of the tiles that are due for installation at the work site. This means that the adhesive
should be compatible to mosaic tiles, glass tiles, polished stone tiles, wooden surface tiles , drywall
tile, or even the metal surface tile. The adhesive should be able to stick even whena thinner layer of
the same is applied as this should indicate that it has low shrinkage properties thus giving the chosen
tile adhesives stronger adhesion. The adhesive should also be very flexible with thermal and physical
movements. 3.2 Based on the material of the grout, we classfy grouts ranging from cement, chemical, resin,
bentonite and bituminous grouts. These are all injected during the tiling process to repair any seen
cracks, fill any voids and seal any joints that might seem faulty in nature. On other characteristics,
grout can be applied on any ground, it does not cause any vibrations, is is suitable for small grounds
structure and it is very useful when it comes to slab jacking. On the limitations, epoxy grout is best
suited for non-porous tiles such as porcelain or ceramic. This means that the type of grout can only be
used on the tiles that do not allow material absorption. Q4
:
Answer the following questions: 4.1. How to store hazardous materials safely on construction site? Write
answer in 70-80 words. 4.2. What are the environmental requirements for installation of mosaic
tiles? Write your answer in 150-200 words
4.3. How can you identify the environmental requirements for workplace
processes and waste disposal? Write your answer in a single sentence.

4.1
To ensure worker’s safety when it comes to storage of hazardous items such as chemicals at
workplace, one should ensure that such materials are stored in a secure as well as well-bunded
chemical storage cabinets. This will ensure that there is reduced access of unauthorized persons to
chemical substance cabinets. This will also reduce the risk of injuries to such people, risk of fires,
explorations or even spills that can harm the personnel involved in the construction activities. 4.2
The environmental legislations should be put in play when installing the tiles. To address the
environmental issues at a worksite while handling wall and floor tilling materials, there should be
clean-up management to ansure that there is involvement of staff members in the process of
ensuring the workplace is healthy and safe for the project undertaking. Another ways is through
waste management in the work environment to ensure that there are no injuries caused by slips, trips
or pieces of tiles misplaced. This can be addressed through immediate clean up of the spills on the
floors. Environmenal requirements for the workplace processes and waste disposal can be identified
through the review of the company wall and floor tilling policies and procedures. This can also be
done through the review of the construction codes of practice in the country in regards to the tilling
activities involved.

Q6:
Answer the following questions: 6.1. How can Site Waste Management Plan (SWMP) help in
implementation of environmentally friendly waste management? Write
your answer in 100-150 words. 6.2. Explain the purpose of job safety and environmental analysis (JSEA)
in 50-100 words.
6.3. What are the WHS requirements for personal protective equipment
for workers on construction site? Write your answer on 50-70 words. 6.4. What is SWMS? What is the compliance requirement for safe work
method statements in accordance with Safe Work Australia Code of
Practice for Construction Work? Write answer in 100-150 words
Satisfactory
response
Yes ☐
No ☐
6.1
Site Waste Management Plan can be used in companies as a way to protect the
environment as they are known their capability to manage and reduce the amount of
waste that is produced by construction undertakings thus ensuring that less waste is

deposited to land fill. The plan also helps in the reduction of costs and expenses that are
attached to the disposal of the same. This means that there will be increased profitability
as the SWMPs will save the company money. Through the site waste management plan,
there will be improved reputation in the market as the company is involved in legally
disposing their waste thus avoiding crushes with the neighbours and legal suits that can
spoil the company name. There is also improved effeiciency on future projects as the
same SWMPcan be improved to deliver best waste management techniques.
6.2
Job Safety Analyses discusses on the safety requirements that are adhred to when
handling tiling materials. The job analyses or safe work method statement must be able
to identify the kind of activities at the workplace that have higher possibilities of risk
occurring and at the same time be able to identify any hazards associated to the risks
that come with the construction work. After this, as per the Codes of Practice, the team
involved should proceed and describe the safety measures that will be required for
implementation so as to control the risks. 6.3
When it comes to the use of the personal protective equipment at workplace, one should
ensure that they are in the right attire for their safety when at workplace. One of the
PPEs they should wear are gloves for the purpose of preventing them from either checial
burns or cutting of dangerous materials used in the tiling process. The employees should
also waer masks to prevent them from inhaling gases that are emitted through reactions
of chemicals that ere used during the tiling process. 6.4
A SWMS refers to a document that is known for setting out the high risk construction
work activities that are meant to be carried out at the construction workplace, noting the
hazards that arise from such activities and the measures that need to be implemented to
see the project risks successfully handled. The Safe Work Australia Code of Practice is a model Code of Practice that is known for the
provison of guidelines that will hep the employees involved in the construction work to
meet the standards of work health and safety (WHS) as it is also directed in the
legislation (WHS Act and Regulations) when it comes to keeping the workplace healthy
and safety for the employees. Q7:

8.4. What is tile trim? Write the procedure to trim external and internal
corners of tile in 100-170 words. 8.1 As a way to start, the person undertaking the tiles installations should do calculations of the tiles
and materials required using the square footage. This is achieved through multiplying the tile's length
and width in inches. Lastly, the personnel should then be involved in dividing the calculated size of
the space by the area of one tile. This will help us get the a result is the exact number of tiles and
other materails required for the installation to be complete.
8.2
The process undertaking the mosaic tiling may differ depending on the type and size of tile being
installed. The first step to be implemented is preparations of the area to be tiled to ensure it is free
from foreign materails. Secondly, there is subflooring and sustrating to create a base for the laying of
the tiles. Planning is the done and tools necessaru for the job brought near the working area.
Measurements are then done during the tiling process then installation is done. Adhesives are added
in bewteen the tiles to ensure they remain firm.
8.3
For successful mosaic tiling process, a number of mosaic substrates are used. They range from
Jackoboard to fibre glass mesh and concrete. The first one is Jackoboard that that is laid on the
concrete surface to ensure that it provides a flat surface that will be meant to ensure that we ladi the
mosaic in an easy and consistent way. The other substrate is fibre glass that provides more firm space
for the mosaic to stick on. A marine plywood can also be used as a platform for gluing the tiles on the
floor. There are also MDFs and tile adhesives that can be used as subtsrates to ensure that the mosaic
tiles remain firmly attached to the intented surface. 8.4
This refers to the procedure that is utilised to ensure excellent finishing at the edges of a tiled
area mostly the corner areas thus giving the tiling process a perfectly finished look. The trimming
process will start with cutting the extrenal or outside corners of the tile fom the backside at an angle
of 45 degrees. The tile is then placed on the tiling area with the cut edge facing the outside end or
the wall. Q9
:
Write the characteristics, preparation requirements, limitations and
compatibility of mosaic tiling materials given in column 1 of the table:
ceramic
stone
glass
metal
Satisfactory
response
Yes ☐
No ☐
On ceramic tiles they are thin, flat tiles and are usually prepared through shaping them with beveled
edges. They are used for lining or covering a surface, and may provide corrosion resistance, thermal
protection, wear resistance, and/or surface decoration. Ceramic tiles come in many different shapes,
sizes, and colors. On the limitations, they are found to be sliperly as they do not absorb water when
wet cleaned and therefore they can cause accidents. On the stone tiles they give the construction
area a hard-wearing, provides an easy to clean and maintain platform as wel as it is durable. On glass
it is easy to break and slipper at the same time. It acts as a substrate to the tiling process. Q10:
Answer the following questions: 10.1 Write two (2) uses of plans while installing mosaic tiles.
10.2 Discuss the importance of drawings in the installation of mosaic

Activity 1
: Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) to identify hazards and control hazards
To perform this activity, the trainer/assessor shall show the required tools and equipment and the work
location to each student so that they are able to identify potential hazards and consider adequate
control measures. The purpose of conducting Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is to inspect work site, locate services, assess
hazards and apply risk controls, including required signage and barricades.
The trainer/assessor must ensure that prior to commencing Activity 3-7, the hazards and faults have
been built into the assessment activities. The fault will be rectified in Activity 3; however, they need to
be set up for planning and review purposes.
Students are to review the physical worksite and tools and equipment, attend a tool-box meeting,
review the instructions manual and complete the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) form/checklist on the
following page. The student must place a “√” in the checkbox if the hazard listed is relevant and leave it
blank/empty if it is not relevant. If the student identifies any hazards, not on the checklist, they must
add them to one of the blank spaces available in the checklist. Students must write up the control
measures they think should be implemented. If the students think there are no control measures
required, they must write “not applicable” in the form as any blank boxes will be marked as
unsatisfactory.
The trainer/assessor will advise students of the timing of the practical worksite review and tool-box
meeting. The trainer/assessor must provide time for students to fill out the JHA form in the classroom after they
complete the work site review and tool-box meeting. Alternatively, students may choose to keep their
assessment package with them while you escort them through the work site review.
Note:
The Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) is provided as Appendix C to this assessment.
Assessors are to show students the work site so that they can identify potential hazards and
consider control measures.
The student must identify potential hazards and consider adequate control measures and
complete Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) provided as Appendix C to this assessment.

students are to listen carefully to the information provided and then fill out the “Record TTool-
boxMeeting” form below. The student must place a “√” against each item they think the Supervisor has
covered. The student must place an “X” against any item that is not covered. If the Supervisor (trainer)
discusses an item that is not included on the form, the student must add a comment in the
“Comment/Discussion” section at the bottom of the form to briefly identified what was discussed.
If the student thinks there were no additional items discussed, be sure to write “not applicable” in the
form as any blank boxes will be marked as unsatisfactory.
The student will be given time to fill out the “Record Toolbox Meeting” in the classroom after they
complete the tool-box meeting. Students are allowed to take the “Record Toolbox Meeting” form with
them to the tool-box meeting.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the trainer/assessor will ask each student to repeat or paraphrase one
item from the list of items. The student will need to respond verbally by summarising their
understanding of what was said about that specific item. This also provides the opportunity for the
student to demonstrate their verbal communication with the rest of the group.
The trainer/assessor will make a note on the assessment record of which question each student was
asked to paraphrase, in addition to comparing the student’s response to the exemplar answer contained
in the assessor guide.

Checklist 4: Install mosaic tiles to flat surfaces.
Steps
Place a tick mark, once completed Step 1: Mark prepared mosaic tiles.
Instructions:
Take all the correct measurements and mark the space where your mosaic
art is being installed.
Make sure to take into consideration all of the physical elements of the
installation.
Further, document the procedures you implemented to mark prepared mosaic tiles
using Template 4.
Step 2: Select adhesive to ensure light-coloured tiles are not darkened and mix
according to usage and climatic conditions.
Instructions:
Analyse job requirements to select adhesive.
Use a white adhesive to ensure light-coloured tiles are not darkened and
mix according to usage and climatic conditions.
As soon as you are sure that the surface is fully prepared, you can go ahead
and start mixing the adhesive with water and powder and start applying it
to the surface.
It is known that most adhesives have a relatively short “pot life”.
From the time you mix the mortar, you usually have roughly 30 to 45
minutes to use it.
In order to do this effectively, you will need a well-organised area where all
the necessary tools are at hand.
Further, document the procedures you implemented to select adhesive to ensure
light-coloured tiles are not darkened and mix according to usage and climatic
conditions using Template 4.
Step 3: Apply adhesive to substrate and install mosaic tiles, maintaining
alignment to the tiles’ set-out lines and face surface.
Instructions:
Using a brush or trowel, spread a thin coat of tile adhesive over a small
section of the substrate to one side of the vertical line.

Procedures you implemented
to mark prepared mosaic
tiles
First thing to do is to mark your cut line on the front of the tile,
using a marker pen. Then, taking your tile sheet, place it face
up on your cutter bed, aligning the cut line with your scoring
wheel. If you are cutting a mosaic pattern with interlocking
edges, it’s important to make sure the nearest edge of the
mosaic sheet is positioned flush, against the line of your
manual cutter.
Score the marked line, making sure to not apply too much
pressure to the tiles as your score the line, as this can cause
the tile to crack. When it comes to breaking your tiles, you will
want to make sure you move down your line, lightly applying
pressure to snap the individual tiles as you work your way
down.
Procedures you implemented
to
select adhesive to ensure
light-coloured tiles are not
darkened and mix according
to
usage
and
climatic
conditions
There should be chosing of different adhesive qualities to
ensure better bonding for different types of surfaces. This
means that the type of the surface that is required tells on what
kind of adhesive is required for the job. For example, we shall
required a premixed paste for smaller tiles, while powdered
adhesive can be used for larger ones.
Procedures you implemented
to
apply
adhesive
to
substrate and install mosaic
tiles, maintaining alignment
to the tiles’ set-out lines and
face surface
Apply a thin skin coat of the adhesive to the substrate with a
flat side of the trowel. Add additional adhesive and cone bridges
in straight lines holding the trowel at a 45 degree angle.
Procedures you implemented
to position mosaic tiles
before the final set and
adjust to ensure joints are
consistent
Consistent taping of the mosaic with a rubber float should be
done to ensure perfect adhesion to the surface. This will be
done to correct any minor errors that might occur during the
installation. We should ensure that the adhesive do not run over
the joints. Unit Code: CPCCWF3006 Student Pack V1.0 Page 58

Procedures you implemented
to clean and prepare joints
to receive grout
Start with clean joints then vacuum the grout lines, then scrape
any protruding grout using a stiff putty knife and vacuum again.
This should be followed by mixing the grout until it's powder-
free. Load the grout float, clean off excess grout, tool the grout
lines and keep some leftover grout.
Procedures you implemented
to
mix and apply grout
This is achieved through letting the mortar rest for 10 minutes
and then mix. This is followed by using a margin trowel mix
cement Tisha's powdered grout with liquid as recommended by
the manufacturer if the grout is too thick to be spread.
Procedures you implemented
to
clean and polish tiles
This can be done once the surface that had been applied with
grout has dried. This time will vary according to the
temperature of the surroundings, but will be between 30 and 60
minutes. Remove the excess grout using the special felt and a
slightly dampened sponge; at all times be careful not to remove
the filling from the joints. This is recommended when the grout
is not already fully hardened.
Procedures you implemented
to protect tiles from damage
during
the
remaining
construction
The tiles can be protected from damage if the activity is carried
out before the grout is completely hardened. If there any
eventual residue on the tiles, they can be removed with a
special acid-based product. If there are any traces of adhesive
on the mosaic, remove the dry excess with steel wool.
