As per the documentary, what kind of architect is Frank Gehry? People describe Frank Gehry as someone who changed the very look of a conservative field, someone who mixed the free willingness of art and the laws of physics. He was an architect who was also an artist and took so many risks to do something new that no one has ever seen before. He is described as a writer-director (some who sits down and conceives something who has the ability to further develop it into real life). 2. Name 5 projects designed by Gehry mentioned in the documentary. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Santa Monica Place, Spiller Residence, Norton Residence, and Wynton Guest House 3. How did Gehry enter the field of architecture? Write about his early days as an architect. He always liked building things with his grandmother and drawing with his dad at a young age. He began his studies at USC and master’s at Harvard in city planning but left before completing the program. He worked for Victor Gruen and Associates. He did a project with an old classmate to which the style of construction became synonymous with his later works. 4. What does Gehry feel about ‘decoration’ on building? Frank Gehry utilized the humanizing values of decoration, however, not in the historical context and more so the postmodernist approach. He liberates his architecture from the weights of history because he believes architecture should address its time and place. 5. Briefly explain Gehry’s approach to design. When he designs, he generates an artistic approach. The constraints within his projects are manipulated to express his vey own creative style. He states that buildings need expression and are not faceless like modernism. Hence, this is why he approaches his buildings as a sculpture and painting.
