Slide Four: Reflection: Why is it important to protect cultural heritage? The Texas A&M University Writing Center describes critical reflection as follows: “Reflective writing looks back at something seen, heard, experienced, or learned and tries to understand it better through writing. Reflections … can express beliefs, ideas, ruminations, opinions, or reactions. If you’re asked to “write a reflection” about something, you’re being asked not only to describe the topic, but also to provide a thoughtful analysis of it.” For this slide, you should visit the UNESCO webpage about the “Safeguarding of Syrian Culture” and watch the video appeal by the UNESCO Director General to “Stop the Destruction,” then write down your reflection in your own words on what you have learned about the following points: 1. The importance of Krac des Chevaliers to cultural heritage in 21 st century Syria 2. How the site contributes to social memory and identity 3. The challenges to its survival presented by the ongoing conflict.
