Touchstone Task 2.1: Planning Network Printer Connectivity
Review the scenario and client expectations
about Greenfield Properties. Make sure you also review the additional client expectations related to this Touchstone Preparation. Based on the information provided by the client, answer the following questions in 2-4 sentences each. Be sure to explain your answers in detail.
What are the pros and cons of using a print server, and what are the pros and cons of using direct IP printing? (Internet research)
Pros of using a print server
are centralized management with a control point for the print jobs, you can optimize print jobs by distributing the print jobs evenly, Security is enhanced by encrypting the print jobs, you can create print cues to print important papers first.
Cons of using a print server
are printing is done on one server and if it goes down there is no printing being done. The scalability of a print server becomes a potential limitation
(Printer Works West, 1, p. 7). They are also complex when setting the system up, and there are issues with overcrowding in the system.
Pros of using a direct IP: the user has the ability to set preferences and settings to the way that is useful to them. Print jobs are sent directly to the workstation, and this boosts productivity.
Cons of using a direct IP:
takes a long time to configure the system. You have to set up the print drivers on every computer using it. There is difficulty in replacing the printer, which could lead to productivity issues. Employees can set their own printing rules due to the lack of oversite (Gage, 2). Also, when there are hundreds of computers on a system there are issues with scalability. Given what you have learned, how will you deploy the printers?
With what I have learned I would put a print server in place. This is a good choice because of the centralized control by management and has the ease of install. There is also the advantage of having security controls in place. This would be the best choice due to the company having a limited IT department.
Which approach makes more sense for this scenario, and why?
A print server makes more sense due to the IT department having limited knowledge of this type of system. The system is also easy to use as far as administration of controls. Having a security system in this type of printing system is also a benefit to the client.
