Lab 9 – Security Policies – Navigating OS Objectives Part 1: Navigating various OS - Explore and navigate various Operating Systems Part 2: Learning various OS – Learning various OS including Windows, MAC and Linux Part 3 : Configuring OS – Configure Oracle VirtualBox and configure Windows 10 OS Background / Scenario The world of Operating Systems seems like only Windows operating system is currently installed around us. When we purchase new laptop, more than likely Windows 10 is already pre-installed for us. However, many current college students have purchased MACs as an alternative to Windows 10 operating systems. Some high-level computer engineer students also decided to install Linux instead of using Windows or MACS. In this lab, we will explore various operating systems. Required Resources Laptop/Desktop (preferably with at least 8GB or better) Internet connectivity Part 1: Navigating various operating systems There are several free websites that can emulate various operating systems. You are going to visit, https://www.onworks.net/ and navigate many different operating systems. Then, you are going to visit, http://www.virtualdesktop.org/complete/ and navigate various older Windows and MAC operating systems. Step 1: Explore https://www.onworks.net/ a. Open a browser and view the website, https://www.onworks.net/ b. How many operating systems do you see on this website? (write down the number of various OS listed) On OnWorks.net, there are 14 Linux operating systems including Ubuntu servers such as Edubuntu, Lubuntu and Kodi Media Center; and there are also 11 other operating systems listed under “Free Wine” including Windows online emulator, Pear OS MAC emulator and Pearl OS MAC theme emulator. ____________________________________________________________________________________ c. How many languages does this website currently support? (write down the number of language support) The website supports a total of 26 languages including English, French and Spanish. ____________________________________________________________________________________ d. Bottom of this website, list top OS for cloud computing. (write down the number of Linux Cloud OS listed) There are 14 Linux Cloud operating systems listed; they are Kodi Media Center, Elementary OS, UberStudent, Ubuntu 19, Ubuntu 20, Mageia, Ubuntu Gnome 16, Bodhi Linux, Edubuntu, Kubuntu, Ubuntu Mate, Ubuntu Studio, Xubuntu and Lubuntu. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Step 2: Find Windows online emulator a. Once you have located Windows online emulator, run it online and use the OS. Once you spend few minutes on it, is it identical to Windows 10 you are used to? Explain the user experience below. The desktop looks identical to the Windows 10 desktop that I’m used to with the exception that—besides having different applications than the emulator’s such as Microsoft Office instead of Libre Office— applications are shown differently with one full page instead of a page that doesn’t engulf the entire screen (in other words the page of applications didn’t look like a page that’s not fully maximized), and the Page 1 of 4
CIS152: Lab 8 – Security Policies search settings are different showing applications, accessories and games in a list view instead of an icon view. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Part 2: Learning various operating systems The desktop support specialist help-desk specialist, and network administrators must learn various operating systems that exists in the field. Your job is to explore various operating system and expose yourself to it. Step 1: Explore CentOS workstation environment a. Same website above, locate CentOS Linux operating system b. What is root password? (You have to read carefully on the website screen) The root password is 123456. ____________________________________________________________________________________ c. What is the IP address of this CentOS workstation? (hint: open terminal then command is ifconfig ) The IP address of the workstation is 10.0.2.15. ____________________________________________________________________________________ d. What is the name of the web browser on this CentOS workstation? The web browser on the workstation is Firefox. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Step 2: Learn legacy (older OS) http://www.virtualdesktop.org/complete/ a. Visit http://www.virtualdesktop.org/complete/ and locate various older Windows and MAC operating system. Choose ANY older operating system and try things out. What is your user experience? It was fun trying out older operating systems for Windows and MAC; most of the Windows operating systems reminded me of the time that I played with Windows on the computer when I was a kid—before we ever heard of Windows 10—and all of the MAC Operating Systems reminded me of my time in grade school when we had iMacs as computers in most of the classrooms. ____________________________________________________________________________________ b. Using and learning both older Windows and MAC operating systems, does every menu item work? (explain your findings below) Not every item works in the operating systems the website has; places such as calculator and games are inactive, as well as a handful of folders that don’t show you anything including whether or not the folders are empty. ____________________________________________________________________________________ c. Overall, in comparing both websites, which website does better job with user experience? Even though VirtualDesktop.org was a great blast from the past for me working with previous Windows and MAC operating systems, I think that OnWorks.net does a better job with user experience mainly because all of the menu items work and can show you what are included in those menu items. ____________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ Page 2 of 4
CIS152: Lab 8 – Security Policies Step 3: Finally use third website called jslinux website b. Visit, https://bellard.org/jslinux/ and explore various operating system located here. Use Windows 2000, and Fedora 29 (Linux) X Window operating system. Does every menu item work and what is your user experience on this website? For both Windows 2000 and Fedora operating systems, every menu item on those systems worked. Unfortunately, I wasn’t a big fan of the website, mainly because of how slow both systems ran on that website. Despite having good flashbacks of using the Windows 2000 operating system back then, it ran slow as if it were an app or a video or song that was still buffering especially when I was checking out the menu items on the system; as for the Fedora operating system, the only thing I would complain about was how long the system booted even though I was still able to check out the operating system per se. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Part 3: Configuring Operating Systems using Oracle VirtualBox You have navigated and learned various operating systems using several websites. Now, you are going to download and install Oracle VirtualBox on your laptop/desktop and configure actual operating system using ISO image available online. Step 1: Explore Oracle VirtualBox online a. Visit, https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads b. This website contains a link for Windows, MACS, and Linux software – install appropriate software for your laptop/desktop operating system c. Scroll down and locate VirtualBox Extension Pack and install it as well. What is current version? The current version of the VirtualBox Extension Pack is 7.0.6, and is available for all supported platforms. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Page 3 of 4
