Management Information Systems Kyle T. Moody 1. Read Chapter 1, particularly the opening story, and the four non-routine skills you need to be a successful business student. Write a page of reflective statement describing an example you have encountered in your former work/ study/life experience; how you have utilized the critical thinking, problem solving skills, etc. If you believe this is something you are not strong at, discuss how you plan to improve the skills. Reflecting on my experiences, I recall a project at my previous job where my team was tasked with increasing the efficiency of our production process. This required critical thinking to identify the bottlenecks, problem-solving skills to devise practical solutions, collaboration among team members with diverse expertise, and the willingness to adapt to new technologies that could automate repetitive tasks. We began by mapping out the entire process, identifying stages that caused delays. Using critical thinking, we hypothesized that automating a specific manual entry system could significantly reduce these delays. To solve this problem, we researched and implemented a software solution that integrated seamlessly with our existing infrastructure. This required learning new software skills and adapting our workflow to accommodate the technology. Collaboration was key throughout this project. We held regular meetings to brainstorm solutions, share insights from different departments, and update on progress. This collective effort ensured that the solution was well-rounded and effective. I recognized that while I was strong in problem-solving and adapting to new technologies, I needed to improve my collaboration skills. I plan to work on this by actively seeking feedback, engaging in more team projects, and practicing active listening to better incorporate others' ideas into solutions. This experience taught me the value of these non-routine skills in real-world applications, and I am committed to continually developing them throughout my career. 2. The Spreadsheet in Microsoft Excel file “Ch1-Data” contains records of employee activity on special projects. Open this workbook and examine the data that you find in the three spreadsheets it contains. Try to do some simple calculation (either manually or use excel functions) to obtain the answers for the following questions. 1
