Assessment
Take some time now to answer the following questions. You need only choose one question from
each section to answer thoroughly and thoughtfully. If you have trouble answering any of the
questions, go back and review the Perspectives & Resources pages in this module.
Choose 6 of the following to complete:
1.
What are content standards and benchmarks, and how are they used?
Content and performance (achievement) standards are tools used to apply and
measure the application of knowledge and skills. Content standards create a clear
outline of the crucial understanding and skills that students need to develop in a
content area. These applications are then measured to guide success. Teachers will
use the information measured to teach content and identify the students' performance
and when to adapt teaching methods. These content standards help the teacher know
if she is teaching students everything they need to learn this year.
2.
Which student learning characteristics should teachers identify before developing
instruction? Why is this important?
3.
Describe the information-processing model of learning.
1.) how the students receive information.
2.) how they connect this information to prior knowledge.
3.) how they use the information. By organizing information into easily recognizable
categories, repetition, and grouping the information, teachers can associate new
knowledge with old so that they are stored together. To help the students easily access
the information once it is placed into long term memory the teacher should use the
information and relate to other subjects they will be learning about in class. As well,
teachers can associate a new topic with something the students are interested in
outside of school, whether it be music, arts, or sports, and draw connections which
will elicit easy information recall.
4.
Adapting instruction is important. Discuss two reasons why this is so.
Educators make changes to instruction in order to allow students equal access to the
curriculum, and to give them the opportunity to process and demonstrate what has
been taught. This can be done either through modifications or accommodations.
Teachers adapting instruction helps students with special needs by maximizing their
independence, increasing their student participation, increasing the student's skill
development, and decreasing the use of temporary solutions that only work to cover
up the problem.
5.
Name three components of a good assessment.
Good assessment must provide relevant information about the students, they
measure the skills, knowledge, or abilities the teacher holds important, they match
purpose with the skills assessed, the assessments use several ways to determine
progress, and the assessments are teacher-friendly meaning that a teacher can
develop, administer, and mark an assessment within the time frame with the correct
resources.
6.
Describe three stages of the instructional cycle.
Stage one of the instructional cycle is the intended instructional outcomes. Effective
teachers begin the instructional cycle by identifying the content standards and
benchmarks that the lesson will address. Next, the content standards are translated
into measurable learning outcomes. At this stage of the instructional cycle, the teacher
has a clear idea of what students need to know, understand, and be able to do to meet
the standards-based curriculum. Stage two of the instructional cycle is planning. In
this stage teachers should plan effective teaching strategies and instructional
activities. It is also important that teachers plan assessments to determine students'
progress. Once the learning outcomes, instruction, and assessment have been
planned, the teacher will carry out the planned lesson. The third and final stage is the
assessment. In this third stage teachers actually implement their planned assessments
to determine whether students have met the intended learning outcomes.
7.
What should guide teachers’ planning in order to meet the needs of all students?
In order to meet the needs of all students, teachers should adhere to curriculum
planning guidelines. When teachers make their plans they should consider things such
as the need to analyze the general curriculum to determine the adequacy of the
curriculum for all learners, the availability of support materials, and strategies used to
teach material to students. The guidelines help to improve instruction, make
placement decisions, and help prompt teachers to actively plan.
8.
How should teachers identify lesson topics to include in instruction?
