Assignment Purpose
: To gain experience by meeting with an HR professional and gaining an
understanding of their role, their career path, their specific HR challenges, and views on HR in
today’s business environment in Canada. Use this as a part of your continued networking
opportunity.
Requirements:
Develop a questionnaire to help structure your discussion and utilize time appropriately. Include
this in your submission.
The questionnaire must be in your appendices.
Conduct a virtual or an in-person interview with a human resources professional in any industry
in Canada. The person can be at any level in HR in Canada.
Please provide relevant contact
information about your interviewee in your report, so that I can verify your interview
.
Following the interview, write a report (see format below) that includes the following
information
:
o
A brief description of the organization in which the interviewee works: the type of
business, the location and the number of locations, the estimated number of
employees, number of HR roles, whether the organization is unionized or non-
unionized environment etc. Tip to help you. You might need to research this
information in advance and confirm the details during the interview.
o
A description of the HR Department in which the person works and the role the
department plays in the organization. An explanation of (a) the relationship between
the HR Dept. and the employees and (b) the relationship with senior management and
members of the HR Dept.
o
An explanation of the extent, if any, is the HR Dept. involved in strategic planning.
o
A description of the HR professional – what is their education and years of experience?
What is their specific role in the organization? To whom do they report? Does the job
require travelling? What are the hours of work? What ongoing professional
development do they take? What skills/competencies does the HR professional view
as key for a HR professional? Do they have their CHRP, CHRL or CHRE designation? Any
other relevant questions you may have.
o
Explanation of what the HR professional sees as emerging trends in HR industry/
sector in Canada.
Include important issues emerging in human resources
management.
o
An explanation of the challenges the HR Dept. faces in this particular company.
o
Critical reflections – In your final report, please ensure that you include your own
experiences doing this interview. What did you learn? Was anything a surprise? Has
this interview changed your perception of HR or the specific field in which your
interviewee works? What are now your thoughts about study HR; do you think it will it
be worth it for you? You may also want to use this link to help you.

Submission Details:
Excluding the title page and appendix and/or references, your report should be
approximately 3-4 pages.
Your paper must have the following headings (a)
