Windows Server upgrade within a company’s infrastructure can be a rather complex and critical task. To prioritize each of the server versions that requires an upgrade, and ensure continued operations, the following steps should be taken: 1. Inventory and Assessment: Conduct a complete inventory of all Windows server installations within the company and place servers in categories based on how important it is to the organization. 2. Evaluate End-of-Life and Support Dates: Make sure to check the status of each server version and versions that are no longer supported or are approaching their end-of-life, need to be prioritized. 3. Security Vulnerabilities: Servers will need to be checked for any known security vulnerabilities and upgraded immediately, to mitigate risk. 4. Check for Application Compatibility: It is important to know if there’s applications compatibility with newer Windows servers. This ensures that the server is recognized and supported by the new operating system. 5. Testing and Upgrade Process: Set up a test environment to evaluate the upgrade process and its impact on applications, services, and workloads. This step is crucial to avoid unexpected disruptions during the actual upgrade. 6. Communication and Training: Communication is key to making sure that everyone is aware of the upgrade plan. IT staff, stakeholders, business units as well as end-users, so be informed about all changes made and if necessary, should be provided with training to ensure smooth post-upgrade operations. 7. Backup and Data Migration: Be sure to perform a complete backup of data, configurations, and settings before initiating an upgrade. And develop a data migration strategy if needed to ensure no data loss during the upgrade. 8. Monitoring and Post-Upgrade Testing: Monitoring the upgraded servers for any issues or performance problems should be done continuously. Also, conduct post-upgrade testing to confirm that all applications and services are functioning as they should. 9. Ongoing Maintenance: When all upgrades are completed, make sure to establish an ongoing maintenance plan to keep the servers up to date with the latest security patches and updates. 10. Documentation: In this final step, documentation of the entire upgrade process, including configurations, issues encountered, and their resolutions.
