Volume 1 | Issue 1 July 9, 2023 Technology Based Assessment and Special Education Technology-based assessments are referred to as the us of electronic system and/or assess to soft5ware in order to evaluate the progress of the individual child in their education setting. Both electronic versions as well as innovative assessment have measurement protocol that must be followed but also utilize the approach of computers. -McCain, 1995 As parents, your child is your number one priority. This newsletter is to inform you about the technology-based assessments that can be used to determine need for Special Education services. Issues regarding the use of Technology Assessments: 1. Pros and cons regarding these types of assessments 2. Up to date technology-based assessments 3. Benefits to these assessments STAR ASSESSMENT This assessment has forty-six different Reading areas that are assessed. This is a technology-based assessment that students will take on the computer. The assessment session can last from fifteen minutes to forty-five minutes, depending on if the student is taking their time or just speeding through to get done. Three of the main assessment domains are: Reading Literature. Reading Informational Text, and Foundational Skills. Benefits of STAR Assessment: The STAR assessment allows teacher to review materials but also provide immediate feedback from the reports given. They even can tell a teacher when a student may be guessing, as the program can see when a student is just clicking and not taking time between answering a question. These reports show the areas that a student is excelling in and which areas they are struggling. This assessment is a helpful tool by allowing progress monitoring. Disadvantage of STAR Assessment: Since this assessment can be monitored if a student is moving too quickly, it means students are taking a multiple-choice assessment. This causes the assessment to not have a reliable indicator of specific progress because student’s do not have to have even an idea on the question and simply can just guess. This does not show a student’s true ability on a test and could either cause them to be higher or lower than they are on a subject.
2 Students disabilities do not define their abilities in the classroom. Lexia Rapid Assessment This assessment allows students to work independently online on activities when using the Lexia’s instructional program. This also allows real time performance data to be collected for teachers to reflect and share with students (Lexia Learning, 2020). This report allows for immediate feedback from their teacher about their scores. It provides insight in the students reading and language skills with most effectiveness of the students end of year reading success. Also, Lexia can help understand why a student may be struggling with spelling, not just reading as well. As a whole, Lexia’s assessment provides literacy profiles of the students in academic language, reading comprehension, and word recognition. PROS: Provides computer score which provides immediate feedback. Gives opportunity for individual monitoring to be presented with visuals to help the team better understand the information. Provides information regarding relationship between benchmark goals and items being assessed on which allows for easy to use and understand. “This assessment is more than just an assessment due to the fact it uses children’s interests to test their skills” (White, 2015). Administrators can stop the assessment when needed and start again when the child is ready. CONS This assessment can be time consuming. The feedback provided may not relate to specific instruction. Usually those that give the test are the only ones who understand how to read the data. How Do These Formal Assessments Results Work with IEP? Students with disabilities are diverse learners with unique needs alongside their strengths. Effective special education teachers must fully understand those strengths and needs. Teachers are knowledgeable in understanding assessment and are skilled in using and interpreting data. Assessments are used to develop students’ IEPs, design, and evaluate instruction, and monitor student progress.
