Unit 2 – Assignment: Homeland Security Certificate
After completing the Homeland Security Certificate, I can say that I learned a lot. As an
HCA, there are numerous and effective actions to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to,
and recover from any type of threat or hazards that require the active involvement of numerous
partners. For example, the community and citizens ensure self-preparedness and work together to
enhance the community’s resilience. In lesson 5, I learned about Emergency Operations Plan or
EOP. As an HCA, I can use an EOP to establish the overall authority, role, and functions
performed during incidents. It’s essential to understand the severity of any threat or hazard to use
the most effective emergency response.
Another important resource planning and coordination consideration during an incident is
how to work efficiently with other organizations. Throughout the course, I learned how a
multiagency coordination system (MACS) provides support, coordination, and assistance with
policy level decisions to the Incident Command System structure managing an incident, and
show be flexible to be efficient and effective. This course taught me a lot about ensuring
partnering with other organizations within the community. In conclusion, I’ve realized that there
are many details to cover when preparing for any type of threat or hazards as an HCA.
