IT390 Unit 4 Topic 1: Any code that harms a computer system or network is considered malicious code. It covers ransomware, worms, Trojan horses, logic bombs, and other harmful software. Four primary types of malicious attacks: o Unplanned Attacks o Planned Attacks o Direct Attacks o Indirect Attacks The use of malicious code generally results in: o Backdoors o Corruption of Data o Distributed DDoS o Security Breaches o Information and Data Theft o Identity Theft o Ransom and Extortion o Potential Damage to Files and Computer Systems (Sangfor Technologies, 2023) Viruses are malicious software that copies itself and spreads to other computers. (Sangfor Technologies, 2023) Its harmful code joins itself with programs that support macros. Many computer viruses include multipart, polymorphic, compression, macro, boot sector, and stealth viruses. Nevertheless, a virus needs a carrier to propagate. It indicates that it moves via downloaded files from the internet or USB connections. A virus can propagate and spread throughout the system and any associated networks once it has accessed your device. Different ways to protect yourself from malicious code: o Install and maintain antivirus software o Use caution with links and attachments o Block pop-up advertisements o Use an account with limited permissions o Disable external media AutoRun and AutoPlay features (CISA, 2019) References CISA.
