4-1 Discussion Roles and Responsibilities in IT For your initial post, use a website such as the Bureau of Labor and Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook or CompTIA's Cyberstates Interactive Map to determine your areas of interest in the IT field. Then, choose a job title or role in that area of interest. In your post, describe how this role is situated within the broader IT fields discussed in this unit, and define the responsibilities of the role. In your responses to your peers, discuss the job title or role they chose. In your response, describe the tools, skills, and certifications your peer would need to be successful in the identified role. Additionally, describe at least one other role that these skills and certifications could be used in. Response #2 Ber, Thank you for sharing your insight on IT roles this week. I can appreciate your interest in the role of doing IT Technical Support. While this may not be the highest paying job in the field of IT it serves a very important role within an organization’s functionality internally as well, depending on the company and type of role, to outside consumers alike. The general responsibilities of an IT support specialist is to have the proper knowledge to evaluate, analyze effectively, and then troubleshoot technology issues that pop up. As I said this can be performed on an internal basis helping employees of organizations solve computer related problems they are experiencing or externally helping customers of a business via telephone or sometimes on a web chat type of communication to troubleshoot and solve ongoing problems they may be experiencing as well. The type of support that is provided can vary greatly
depending on company needs but can include software support for various business products, hardware connectivity issues, or internet connectivity problems (Sarangabany, 2017). If one is interested in entering into the IT field this would serve as a great starting point for someone wishing to do so without having to have any formal college education in most cases. That said, having certifications that are industry specific such as the Microsoft 365 certification and the Apple Certified Support Professional can prove useful. In addition, there are other certifications that would benefit an IT Support Professional that could be widely utilized within any organization that you pursue a position to include CompTIA A+ 2023, ITIL 4 Foundation, and HDI-CSR certification. All of these additional certifications can prepare an individual to better interact with customers needing support and help one become more familiar with the various devices and software they will be providing service for. Of all the certifications CompTIA+ 2023 is the most widely recognized and sought after. This course touches on hardware, networking, security, mobile devices, operational procedures, and virtualization and cloud computing to name a few (Tittel, 2023). With the skills gained from additional certifications and on the job training in an IT Support role a person could also fulfill a role as a Technical Support Professional, Service Desk Analyst, Desktop Support Technician, or as an IT Support Specialist. In addition, a role of this type can serve as stepping stone for someone wishing to move into more advanced roles in the IT industry but it would most likely carry a requirement of also pursuing higher education unless you stayed within the same company and chose to work your way up into higher roles. In that type of scenario an organization may forego the traditional required education and use one’s one the job acquired skills and knowledge. More advanced roles that someone could move into
would be things such as Systems Administrator, Systems Engineer, or a Network Administrator (Resume Worded, 2023). References: Sarangabany, P. (2017, September 6). As you said, in the world we are currently living in the area of cybercrimes being committed against businesses and consumers is one that continues to grow at an alarming rate and having properly trained individuals in place that know how to ward off and respond to attacks via computer networks is a role that is critical in a number of ways. Some of the specific skillsets, tools, or certifications that would prove useful in a career as a security analyst would be things like the ability to perform ethical hacking in order to help an organization recognize areas of their networks, computers, systems, or organizations that could expose them to potential threats. Another useful skill is the ability to perform reverse engineering which makes it possible for analysts to understands why various software works in the way it does so that they can then patch bugs or malware problems that may arise. important to any organization is the ability of an analyst to manage the IT responses to incidents that occur due to breaches or attacks on the company’s network security and then making the necessary alterations to the security protocols and controls for future responses (Raise Labs, 2022). There is a lot of overlap in security in the IT field. It would be very common to overlap between various groups of analysts with the IT department. The computer analysts, information system analysts, internet security analysts and network security analysts would have to commonly work together to develop an overall security plan for an organization. In addition to a Bachelors of Science degree in Computer Science some additional certifications that a person wanting to enter into a Security Analyst position would be a CompTIA Network+ certification, CWAPT Certified Penetration Tester, Certified Reverse Engineering Analyst, and Certified Reversed Hacker. (Zhang , 2023) All of these certifications can be useful to those that are either wanting to build upon on their current education and positions as well as though that are still wanting to get into the field and secure their first position. If there is one thing that can be said about pursuing a position as a Security Analyst it is that it is a career that is going to be in high demand for a long time to come. Hackers are only getting smarter and more technologically advanced and so it will be crucial in this position that you are always continuing your education and building upon your knowledge and skillset. Digital Guardian. https://www.digitalguardian.com/blog/what-security-analyst- responsibilities-qualifications-and-more Information technology is the use of computer systems and tools to create, process, store, retrieve, access, and exchange information. In today's modern era, information technology relates to the way of life, which now has a large share of responsibility for the workforce, business operations, and access to personal information. It also includes our daily activities and dramatically impacts our lives, whether we store, retrieve, access, or manipulate information. While I am currently pursuing a Bachelors degree in Business with a focus on Project Management and it doesn’t correlate to any field within IT, I can see how the professionals working in this field would make my job much easier as a project manager due to the vast number of software programs that are utilized by persons in this role. For that reason, I chose the job of a Software Developer to look at closer and see what that role fully entails within the field of IT. Software developers often fall under the broader field of software engineering within the field of Information technology. The U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics puts this profession under the umbrella of Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers. This is because the developers are responsible for the design of computer programs or various applications and then the analysts and testers are responsible for identifying any problems or defects with the software so that necessary corrections can be made by the developer (United States Dept of Labor, 2023). So, in
this scenario you can see how this profession would require a team for the successful development of new software or applications. The Software Developer still requires a 4-year Bachelor’s degree but not quite as much education that someone that was in the software engineering field would be required to have. The necessary functions of a software developer are research, design, and development of computer and network software or specialized utility programs. Analyzing user needs and developing software solutions, applying principles and techniques of computer science, and engineering in the development process. Updating software or enhancing existing software capabilities. The ability to work with computer hardware engineers to integrate hardware and software systems if necessary, and develop the necessary specifications and performance requirements (O-Net, 2023). It is important to note that in addition to Software Developer this position can also be referred to as an Application Developer, Application Integration Engineer, or a Software Architect. Even though it may be referred to by a different title the job function under the various title remains virtually unchanged. The job outlook for this position is a good one with an expected 25% growth in the field over the next 10 years. It should be said that no matter what sector of IT one may be considering it is a field that will remain secure over the coming years. Our technology is constantly advancing in our country and I feel confident that it will continue to do so for quite some time. We continue to see that humans are being replaced steadily more and more AI technology every day. I can only imagine what our future holds and what type of function our IT professionals will play in our technological advancements. References
