What are some challenges for the development of autonomous vehicles? Support your answer with
references.
The development of autonomous vehicles faces several challenges that need to be addressed for their
widespread adoption. Safety is one of the major problems for driverless cars. It is crucial to make sure
that autonomous systems can reliably and accurately detect their environment, decide what to do, and
react to changing circumstances. But achieving a high level of safety is challenging because of things like
unexpected human behavior, bad weather, and technical constraints. Also, the regulatory environment
of autonomous vehicles is still evolving. As such, creating legal and regulatory laws is necessary for the
development of autonomous vehicles. Liability, insurance, data privacy, cybersecurity, and adherence to
current traffic regulations are all challenges that these systems must manage. Laws and regulations differ
throughout nations and even within states and provinces, making it difficult to synchronize them across
multiple jurisdictions. Nonetheless, governments around the world are working of these regulations.
In addition, onset of autonomous driving has provided fertile ground for discussions about ethics in
recent years. Autonomous vehicles actually raise complex ethical questions. They face ethical dilemmas
when faced in situations where harm is inevitable (Martinho et. al, 2021). For instance, how should the
car prioritize the protection of its occupants over the safety of pedestrians or other vehicles in scenarios
where an accident is unavoidable? Similarly, there are also questions as to the accident liability. Who
should be liable for accidents caused by Avs? Should it be the manufacturer or the passenger? (Gupta,
2023).
All of these are questions that still needs to be answers when it comes to AVs
Finally gaining the public's trust and acceptance is very important and it requires addressing these moral
conundrums/concerns and making sure decision-making algorithms are transparent and accountable.
