Proposal
Given the organizational needs of the business I recommend an upgrade to Windows 10
professional for all computers within the company. Any Mac Books being used can be upgraded
to MacOS Monterey where possible as this is a free upgrade provided the computer being used
fits the system requirements. Although the MacOS could be done away with altogether if there is
room in the budget to replace all Mac Books with PCs instead. Additionally, the IT team should
upgrade to Windows server 2016 or even 2019 to continue to use the most up to date version of
their server-based applications.
The reason for this choice is that Windows 10 is capable of running all necessary
programs that employees are currently using. Windows 10 comes in multiple editions, but
Windows 10 Professional would be the most appropriate here as the Home edition may not have
all the needed features and this business is not large enough to use Windows 10 Enterprise. In
order to show the process behind this choice I will go through each department’s needs and how
this transition would be a good fit.
The IT department has the highest software and hardware needs in the company. For the
programs they use Windows Office 365 and Adobe Acrobat Pro are both supported by Windows
10. The Solar Winds applications are phasing out compatibility for Windows Server 2012 R2
4
which is why an upgrade will be required to at least Windows Server 2016 in order to continue to
use Solar Winds. However, I would recommend upgrading to Windows Server 2019 as this will
allow for potential upgrades to the Solar Winds products in the future. Finally, IT uses
ServiceNow which uses the most up to date versions of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and
Google Chrome all of which can be run on Windows 10. For anything the IT department is using
Linux Redhat for they could continue to do so via either a virtual machine or a second partition
on the hard drive.
Marketing currently uses Windows 7 and MacOS El Capitan and should be updated to
Windows 10 Profession and MacOS Monterey respectively. Windows 10 can run all Adobe
Products and of course Office 365. The other programs Marketing uses are all accessible through
the cloud via Google Chrome or other web browsers all of which are compatible with Windows
10. As all of these programs are compatible with Windows 10 there is really no need to continue
using the Mac OS, but Apple computers will only run Mac OS so if the company is going to be
keeping any Mac Books etc. they should be upgraded to Mac OS Monterey as this upgrade is
free and simple. The Training department would be the same where all of their applications are
usable on Windows 10 or via a browser for cloud-based training software, there would be no
need for MacOS
Lastly is the HR, Finance, Admin, Security and Operations departments. These
departments all run a very similar set of applications and cloud based tools that would work
perfectly on Windows 10. As these departments all currently run Windows 7 they could easily be
upgraded to the latest version of Windows 10 Professional.
In conclusion it is my recommendation that this company upgrade to Windows 10
Professional as this would fit all their software needs and provide new capabilities only available
5
in the newer versions of Windows. The business should also upgrade to Windows Server 2019
where applicable and if possible do away with use of the MacOS as this ads an unnecessary level
of complication while not really adding any additional functionality or benefit. See the following
diagram for a visual of what the final roll-out would look like.
