2-2 Journal: Extract, Transform and Load Data (ETL)
During the week I have learned that ETL moves data from one system to another and the
data is loaded to a data warehouse. ETL is the abbreviation for Extract, Transform, and Load and
is a process that extracts data from sources into a data warehouse. I also learned how each step
applies in the ETL process and have described the steps to follow. Extract is the first step in the
ETL process, and the raw data is gathered from numerous data sources, for example, databases,
Excel spreadsheets, and web scraping. The data obtained can be structured, semi-structured or
unstructured, and it can come from a range of sources such as an ERP or CRM system, a website
or eCommerce web store, a marketing solution or an Excel spreadsheet [ CITATION Cod23 \l

ensures that all data is cleaned and formatted accordingly for the target business system and
database structure. To become compatible with the target system or database, the data
transformation function uses the data that has been extracted from the initial data source and
dynamically converts this data into the necessary format or database structure[ CITATION
Cod23 \l 1033 ]. Load is the last step in the ETL process and is where the data is loaded into a
target system or database. During this process, the data is structured into a format that is easily
accessed, queried, and analyzed.
I can apply this new knowledge in a business environment by automating ETL pipelines,
loading information into the data warehouse, extracting data, and running tests. ETL can be used
to improve data quality for businesses. For example, ETL can be used to understand customer
trends and increase user satisfaction. ETL can also be used to enhance business performance and
is essential when making data driven decisions. I can use ETL to improve data management in a
retail company by analyzing sales data from other store locations.
