When deciding on the best internet service provider (ISP) for the new Fayetteville office, we needed to find a provider that could deliver fast speeds, necessary for our video conferencing and large print jobs sent through the network to the New York office, and impeccable reliability. We have the available connections in each potential space to accommodate any ISP, so we are limited only by what is available in our area.
Based on currently available information on Broadbandnow (2023) and Businessinternet.com (2023), the available internet providers are based largely on address. While Fayetteville has good internet coverage in general, the general consensus among multiple resources is that the options will likely be between Spectrum, with 99.3% coverage in Fayetteville, and Viasat, with 100% coverage in Fayetteville. Spectrum offers both cable and fiber, while Viasat is a satellite internet provider (Broadbandnow, 2023). Though their cable coverage is more extensive than their fiber coverage, Spectrum still has the most extensive fiber offerings in the area. Other pros of Spectrum are that they have a Fayetteville location should we need to visit the business for any reason, they offer Gig Internet, and they have landline bundles with unlimited long distance available, which would give the option of relieving our network connections of VoIP data transmission, per information from https://www.spectrum.com. The next option with city-wide coverage is Viasat. While they cover the entire city of Fayetteville, Viasat is a solely satellite ISP. They do appear to be the fastest satellite ISP, however. AWesccording to Broadbandnow (2023), their speeds max out at 100Mbps. This is far below the required speed for a company of our size and internet needs. Their available plans are also substantially more expensive compared to their similar speed counterparts at Spectrum.
Ultimately, we will have little choice in the matter and will have to work with what is available and build any backup providers and our internal network around that. Given the available options, Spectrum is who I recommend the company use for an ISP.
Due to the mobility of the majority of our employees, it is imperative that we utilize a DHCP server to allow for dynamic IP addresses. This will keep from using up IP addresses that may be needed on hardware that isn’t connected to the network. It is recommended the company continue to handle all employee laptop configurations centrally in the IT department to allow for seamless integration. This should apply to both hardware and software, to keep file types similar and less likely to be distorted if being edited on multiple machines and/or multiple locations.
Locally, we will need 1-2 network printers utilizing cloud print services to allow employees to print from anywhere, with the EVP getting their own printer in their office and on the private VPN that the executive office will have. We will utilize a cloud printing service for sending large print jobs to the industrial printer in NY, as well.
