Critical Analysis IDS-403 3-2 ACTIVITY ANTHONY VELOTTI
Impact on institutions Social media has impacted many different institutions since its creation. One institution that has been affected by social media is politics. Social media encourages civic and political responsibility. Many of today’s youth take to digital spaces to develop their civic identities and express political stances in creative ways (ProCon.org, 2020). Social media allows for political members to express their message to the masses. The increase in use allows individuals to respond to messages in positive and negative ways based on political affiliation and ideology. According to a Pew Research Center survey 64% of Americans feel social media provides a negative affect on the way things are going in the country today (Auxier,2020). The negative effect comes from the fear of misinformation. Misinformation really started occurring during the 2020 presidential election. Social practices In the past 20 years social media has changed the way individuals communicate with one another. As technology has continued to trend upward, talking on phones with friends and family is an afterthought. Around 3 billion people use social media which is 40% of the world using social media for communication (University of the People, 2020). People are using social media to date allowing for people to meet each other through different apps. This allows people to get to know one another before meeting in person. Social media has become a powerful tool in connecting cultures and bridging cultural divides. It allows for people all over the world to communicate share their experiences with each other, breaking down barriers and fostering understanding (The Importance of Social Media in connecting Cultures and Bridging Divides – Openr, 2023). This technology has had such a positive impact in connecting individuals for communication purposes.
Limitations Social media is known to have several disadvantages. Social media has problems with privacy. People posting inappropriate information, sharing to much personal information with large audiences, or sharing your online location are disadvantages of social media (iSchoolConnect, 2022). Cyberbullying is another issue with social media. Individuals will use the platform with a fake account to psychologically disturb or tease victims (iSchoolConnect, 2022). Being aware of the issues will help individuals navigate social media and enjoy the platform.
