Week 7: Investigation Notes
It is the start of the seventh week of this investigation. Your unit supervisor
has requested that you tie together any loose ends and submit a final
investigative report. You have been provided with all available information
for this investigation. Your work this week will focus on putting together all of
the pieces, drawing connections where appropriate and submitting a final
report to close out this investigation.
There is still much work to be completed. Please review the Assignment for
this week early and dig deep.
Week 7: Investigation Deliverable
You are a forensic examiner working for the Champlain Police Department
(CPD). Over the past several weeks, you have been assigned to assist in
investigating a fraud report filed by a Mr. Walter Emerson. Throughout the
weeks you have been working on this case, you have gained access to
various pieces of digital evidence. Each piece has been able to provide you
with a piece to the puzzle. In this week, you will need to take all of these
pieces and build the whole picture.
Your unit supervisor has requested that you conclude your work on this
investigation and submit a final investigative report. This report will be due
on Friday of this week. This final investigative report will need to incorporate
the following elements:
Documentation of the evidence items that you have collected, or you
have been provided throughout this investigation. This will be a
complete table of the forensic images, and data acquired from
electronic content providers.
The analysis work that was completed on each of the evidence items
collected or provided throughout this investigation.
An accurate in-depth timeline that brings in elements from all evidence
items. This timeline should be thorough and complete. The most
important aspects of the investigative work you have completed
should be highlighted.
It should be written in a manner that would
explain to a reader unfamiliar with the investigation what exactly took
place.
Any relevant documents and files of importance, and path location.
Internet use (browsers, social media sites, searches).
This should
document usage patterns for both the offender(s) and the victim
identified in this investigation.
When you are strategizing on how to put this report together think about
“both sides of the coin”. You have information and data from both the victim
and the offender(s) involved. Take the time to draw linkages between things
such as an email sent, and an email read. File creation timestamps for any
suspicious or concerning files and computer usage should be examined.
Communication content should be explored and analyzed. Were there any
key moments between any persons involved that should be highlighted?
Were there any signs of manipulation that you could detect?
When writing a detailed investigative analysis report such as this, ensure
that you are taking the time to explain everything. When you are writing
about any artifact(s) that you are taking the time to explain what the artifact
is, where it is located, and why it is important. Repeatability or the ability for
a reader to follow along and recreate the steps you took is vital.
Finally, make sure to refer to your past reports and assignments. Bring in
elements of these reports where necessary. Use the
