The Development of a Wireless Network Site Survey
The Development of a Wireless Network Site Survey Brendyn Hitt Bellevue University Professor Nyburg CIS311-T302 Network Security 10/15/2023
What is a Wireless Network Site Survey? A wireless network site survey is an inspection that is physically performed prior to the installation of a radio frequency (RF) network. Purposes of this inspection are to determine: Wireless coverage Quality of service Network capacity Data rates Capability of roaming access

Why are Wireless Site Surveys necessary? Wireless Interference RF Spillage Incomplete site coverage Accurate resource count
What should a site survey accomplish? Identify areas of interference Identify hardware needed for coverage Identify # of access points needed Identify # of antennae needed Identify type of antenna and access points needed
Site Surveying Checklist 6 Accommodation for specialty equipment. (scaffolding, manlift, scissor lift, etc.) Necessary throughput to use Characteristics of site (Thick or thin walls, multiple floors, open floor plan, etc.) # of users Type of devices being used Applications/software being used on devices

Floor layout blueprint Site Survey plan Access to breaker box (if necessary) Access Points Antennas Mounting Hardware 7 Test Software Access to on-site device Power Source Camera to assess potential issues Tools for Wireless Site Surveys
Popular Site Surveying Methods Predictive Survey Survey is completed before site is occupied. Helpful to determine optimal placement of Access Points. Passive Survey Gain info on all surrounding signals. Determine wireless frequencies that may cause interference. Active Survey Survey takes place during active network use Measures access points, overall throughput, and packet loss occurring throughout the site 8
Considerations of Site Surveying What is the network being designed for? Coverage Capacity What is the use case of the Network? How many devices? What are these devices doing? What would be the best cabling path? Will the use of legacy devices (Wi-fi 4 or older) be needed? 9

Site Survey Scenario You are a network engineer for a small hotel chain that has been recently acquired by a much larger hotel company. The parent company wants to upgrade the facilities in your hotel chain to include: Replacing the existing wireless LANS to assist mobile hotel administration To provide guests with a more secure wireless Internet connection. 10
Step 1: Assess floor plan Assess the current floor plan In this case, networks will be created for both hotel guests and hotel employees Use the floor plan to determine areas of need for coverage. Take different architectural design into account. (Walls, ceilings, elevators, doors, etc.) Silver 11
Step 2: Locate Existing Access Points 12 To provide guests with a more secure experience, access points will be updated to Wi-Fi 6. A dual band network option will be provided to guests. WPA3 will be available on 2.4GHz networks for VIP guests who require encryption of their data for business needs. WPA2 on 5GHz networks will be provided complimentarily. Speeds will be increased on devices compatible with Wi-Fi 6. Due to increased coverage of Wi-Fi 6, a new AP configuration may be needed.

Step 3: Test Current Network Coverage 13 Create a route in which you will walk the floor plan Keep note of signal strength as you are traversing the site Look for dead zones, weak areas, and areas of high traffic

Continue testing and moving APs until all devices have full connection. Step 4: Install/update APs based on current testing

How will this network be more secure? 16 An example of how Wi-Fi 6 will increase security is through a "Dragonfly Handshake" As opposed to a four-way handshake, a dragonfly handshake can be implemented to prevent an offline dictionary attack. ODAs implement a password generator to bypass WPA2 network passwords The enhanced security of WPA3 prevents this.
What are monitoring tools? 17 Wireless Intrusion Detection and Prevention System These monitor and sample network traffic to identify WLAN attacks Dedicated WIDPS Fixed WIDPS Mobile WIDPS
