Homework 1 Yogini Borgaonkar Question 1: - Time management: determining how to divide up essential/non-essential activities throughout the day, without experiencing unreasonable stress. - Budgeting: Collecting data about my spending habits will allow me to understand where and how much money is being spent. This analysis can help cut back on unnecessary spending. - Health: Keeping track of all meals and how much water I am drinking would definitely show patterns and allow me to understand why I might feel a certain way in the morning, at night, or just in general. Question 2: Analytics can be used to help the supermarket so that the customer experience during these heightened hours isn’t damaged through slow or poor customer service. Data that would be useful in this situation: - Customer volume during each day of the week and per hour - How many customers check out per hour - What is the average amount of time a customer spends actively checking out their items (from putting their items on the register belt to payment) - How many cash registers need to be open during high traffic periods to make sure that wait times are limited and no registers are being unused Question 3: - Booking method: Identifies where and how customers book their room. This can help the hotel manage marketing resources, optimize pricing, and further invest in popular/successful channels. For example, the hotel might have 70% of its customers booking through its own website. Therefore, it is reasonable to spend a significant amount of effort improving website design and user experience. - Check-in/check-out time: Identifies high traffic times throughout the day that can help staff scheduling, payment options, and other welcoming amenities at check-in times. High check-out times can help the hotel staff optimally plan for room cleanings, maintenance, and other service related help for customers. - Demographics: Age, gender, nationality, and occupation of guests can help the hotel
tailor its services for specific preferences/patterns. - Revenue per Guest: Identifying the amount spent per guest on different hotel commodities can help future pricing strategies, by either lowering or raising costs to optimize hotel revenue. Question 4: - Customer Traffic: Determining what days of the week and what hours have the highest traffic can help with ordering the appropriate amount of inventory, staff scheduling, and identifying peak hours to offer customers promotional deals. - Customer Wait Times: Measuring the time it takes for customers to place an order and receive their food can help identify steps in the production process or ordering process that can be optimized. - Online orders: Determining the amount of orders that come from web/mobile can help the company understand what parts of the ordering process can be more efficient and how to make the user experience more cohesive. Question 5: Customer ID: Ordinal, ordered by relation to their numerical order Region: Categorical, sorted by discerning geographical criteria Payment: Categorical, sorted by different financial institutions Transaction Code: Ordinal, ordered by relation to customer and business Source: Categorical, sorted by method of purchase Amount: Ratio, prices have a natural zero Product: Categorical, sorted by characteristics of product Time Of Day: Interval, time has an arbitrary zero point Question 6: What types of data (categorical, ordinal, interval, or ratio) would each of the survey items represent and why? Gender: Categorical, sorted by discerning either male or female Age: Ratio, the age of a person has a natural zero Ethnicity: Categorical, sorted by discerning physical/family based characteristics Length of Residency: Ratio, the amount of time someone has lived in an area has a natural zero (3 years is a lesser amount of time and half of 6 years) Overall Satisfaction: Ordinal, the 1-5 scale is ordered but the intervals between numbers are not uniform or objectively meaningful to a user Quality of Schools: Ordinal, the 1-5 scale is ordered but the intervals between numbers are not
uniform or objectively meaningful to a user
