Week 3 Assignment (Short Answers) Topic: After conducting independent research, respond to the following questions: What if the Internet in your company/organization went down for a day. 1. How would this impact the company/organization? I currently work for a university, if the internet went down for a day, this means that approximately 90% of the workforce would shut down. We rely on the internet almost 100% of the time to function collectively as a university and a system. 2. What issues might arise from having no Internet? The list of issues that might arise from not having internet are endless. Keeping in mind that I work at a university, all online classes will be canceled and even some in-person classes would be interrupted due to the use of internet to aid the professors in their lessons. On the other hand, for the administration side of the university, most work tasks are conducted through the internet. All types of communication such as phone, zoom, e-mails, etc. would immediately seize. Keeping in mind the President’s Administration Team conclude of back-to-back meetings between individuals from the university and others afar, these tasks would not be possible without internet. The Campus Police would not be able to do their jobs properly and accurately due to means of communication. I think the only two professions that would not be as affected, are the maintenance and custodial folks since their jobs are more hands on, but even then, they also require the internet or order tools, parts, and supplies. 3. What plans have been established to compensate for having no internet access? Unfortunately, I have only been working for this organization for a short period and I am usure of our plan if the internet goes down. In the past, while I was in the military, we had protocols in place. For example, I was an administrator and we had personnel rosters, forms, and military orders printed out and saved in a safe place where the need of internet was not required to view or use these
documents. I am also sure the university has these plans in place incase of an internet outage because I have heard people talk about updating such plans. 4. What are some possible solutions to the problems that might arise from no Internet? The number one solution to mitigate problems that might arise from no internet is to establish a contingency plan. This plan includes individual roles within an office/department, backup systems to ensure operations have no disruption in the company. Secondly, keeping offline data back up, regularly backing up critical data, important documents that do not require internet. Finally, figuring out the communication piece, utilizing other means of communication channels, such as landlines and conducting meetings in person will allow those who need to meet, to meet with others and make decisions. By having a proactive approach and having these mitigation plans in place, a company/organization will be prepared for these types of situations without significant impact and continue in business without interruptions.
