CELL PHONE FORENSICS 2 Cell Phone Forensics Cell phone forensics has become a useful and powerful crime-fighting tool. Smartphones and cell phones have become a regular part of an investigation because they are now owned by most people and provide valuable information for investigators to piece together motives and events. These small-sized machines are like a digital extension of ourselves. This paper discusses how law enforcement tracks and uses cell phone forensics. Mobile devices are not just cell phones; this term encompasses a wide range from smartphones, tablets, and GPS units to wearables and PDAs. They all have one thing in common they can contain a significant amount of user information. Details such as call history, contacts, web browser history, texts, pictures, videos, passwords, and documents can all be extracted from our phones. Digital forensics involves investigating and recovering raw data kept in digital and electronic devices. This procedure's objective is to rescue and extract any information from the digital device without changing the existing data in the machine. Mobile forensics deals with recovering digital proof from mobile devices. The primary principle for a solid forensic investigation of digital proof is that the original evidence should remain unmodified (Wendorf, 2021). Forensic examiners use Mobile Track Visualizations. It can easily and quickly acquire GPS coordinates from any iOS device or Android source without a root. The mobile phone's location is traced using geographic location tracking station information. This can aid law enforcement in locating individuals' whereabouts and link them to a crime. Mobile phone tracking was also used in the riots at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021; authorities obtained cell phone records to narrow down and prove who that day was there. Our cell phones are
CELL PHONE FORENSICS 3 constantly pinging off nearby cell towers, producing a signal and then receiving one back (Pawlaszczyk, 2022). Depending on the strength and time the emitting signal takes to reach that tower is how the location of the phone can be found. Although technicians can extract information from phones, it is becoming increasingly harder to break into them due to new privacy-enhanced technologies and variations of models hitting consumers' shelves. Things like passcodes, biometric access, and full hardware-based encryption have improved data security recently. New technologies such as Secure Enclave on iOS or Trust Zone on Android enable mobile devices to deter attack efforts beyond what most computers could accomplish. Popular messenger apps hide customers' data so deep within protected areas of the cell phone that encrypted databases are now the norm which causes issues with extracting data. Currently, specialized digital forensics software is required to obtain significant data, and training technicians on how to use this software continues to be a challenge in most organizations (Pawlaszczyk, 2022). People are also becoming more aware of vulnerabilities to their personal information extracted from their mobile phones or that they are being listened to or tracked. In 2014, whistleblower Eduard Snowden working for the National Security Agency (NSA), helped reveal highly classified information and data on several secret surveillance programs being gathered without the consent. Mobile phone companies have headed the need to protect their customers' privacy and make it more difficult for criminals and authorities to obtain information easily (Pawlaszczyk, 2022). Digital forensics today is an essential part of nearly every criminal investigation. 85 percent of all investigations include electronic evidence (Wendorf, 2021). The continuing change in technology brings new challenges to law enforcement to preserve and obtain evidence. The
