Which learning activity was the most instrumental / why does that style of presenting information suit you best?
One aspect of this course that I have been particularly grateful for is the variety of avenues available to learn about the topics presented. As someone
who does not process information solely from reading, I have found it most helpful to utilize a variety of the sources. Generally, I start with reading the PMBOK Guide readings to form a baseline understanding of the topics. From there, I find the Module’s, in this case Module 5: Project Performance and Risk Management Interactive Lecture to be the most beneficial for learning. Lastly, I go to the course book to get further into detail surrounding the topic to ensure that I fully understand all the components.
Furthermore, elaborate on how a specific portion (or aspect) of the learning activity informed your understanding for each of these two learning outcomes.
In order to best understand designating project performance metrics, I found
the course textbook, Chapter 15 in
Project Management: A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling and Controlling
to be the most beneficial. The depth on the topic that the textbook went into surrounding KPIs and other types of metrics such as value based metrics was helpful in comprehensively understanding the topic. Personally, I did not find I was able
to grasp this topic from the course module or PMBOK guide alone.
With regards to interpreting project performance using earned value analysis, I found the combination of Module 5.1 and the LinkedIn Learning video to help me understand this concept. In the LinkedIn Learning video, the combination of auditory and visual learning really helped solidify my understanding of what an EVP is. At the end of the video, there is a recommended activity to test your understanding (Biafore, B., 2022). I always find these helpful to determine if I have fully grasped the concept, or if I need to go back and find another resource to help.
How will these learning outcomes improve or benefit your project management competence?
Working in the corporate world, especially in tech, everything is based around metrics and analytics. With any endeavor, it’s important to determine
if the end result will add value back to the company, and if the cost of the project was worth it. Learning more about performance metrics and earned value analysis will greatly support my career in taking on more project management roles.
